MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Slow-moving Typhoon Nanmadol remained dangerous Sunday despite weakening as it struck the tip of the mountainous northern Philippines, leaving at least eight people dead and scuttling a visit by a U.S. Navy battleship group, officials said.

With its enormous cloud band, the typhoon drenched the northern Philippines with rain for days before pummeling the area with fierce winds, setting off landslides and floods and knocking down walls that left at least eight people dead and six others missing, said Benito Ramos, who heads the Office of Civil Defense.

Nanmadol had sustained wind of 121 miles (195 kilometers) per hour and gusts of 143 mph (230 kph) Friday, becoming the strongest typhoon to hit the Philippines so far this year. It weakened after grazing northern Cagayan province Saturday. It was expected to skirt the northernmost Batanes islands with 75 mph (120 kph) winds Sunday before starting to blow away from the country, Philippine government forecasters said.

Nanmadol was expected to hit Taiwan as early as Monday, Taiwan's central weather bureau said. It urged residents to prepare for strong winds and torrential rain, and warned there could be landslides in mountainous regions and flooding in low-lying areas.

Ferries connecting Taiwan's mainland to islets and some domestic flights were canceled. Train service in southern and eastern Taiwan was to be suspended, and two major roads in eastern and central Taiwan were to be closed starting late Sunday afternoon.

Gonna be plenty of flooding in China too. Plus I will bet some of those islands wont be there after this storm. :-\

Yep and the rural areas will no doubt be devastated. Course they won't have the great media coverage we have with reporters standing out in the waist deep water making asses of themselves either.

I was hoping some gigantic Wave would come and Sweep Soledad Obrien out to Sea.....I can stand her. CNN always lets her put shit about race or MLK. To me thats an agenda. Cuz she has done so for over 5 yrs straight and running. Then sometimes CNN runs her shit all damn Weekend early in the AM.

They get barely any coverage. Maybe after the fact. Here our reporters will talk about flooding once the water starts to flow over their loafers.

That sort of hurricane is not a large threat precisely because it travels directly over land.

Hurricanes lose their strength the longer they are over solid earth.

Take note of how it is quickly downgraded to [Tropical Storm] on your map.

This is a Typhoon.....which means it cyclones and then dumps massive amounts of rain all over the place for whatever region it covers. Same deal tho.....flooding will be the major concern. Still the coverage like CL said.....is minimal. Not even a peep from ours yesterday about this one. At least not on CNN and MSDNC..... :-\
