Mayor de Blasio defended his crime-fighting record Tuesday, even as murders and shootings surged in the city.
Homicides have jumped 19.5% in the first five months of the year, and the number of people shot increased 9%, as NYPD officials revealed this week (http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/nyc-crime/cops-seek-sweatsuit-clad-man-shot-bystander-brooklyn-article-1.2242439). But de Blasio insisted policies already in place will reverse the spike and vowed to stay the course.
“We have the right approach to driving down crime, and we have factual evidence of that,” de Blasio said at an impromptu news conference at City Hall to address the latest crime stats. “We have the right approach for turning the tide.”
