First heard Taubes in a podcast interview by economist in 2011 at Taubes on Fat, Sugar and Scientific Discovery (http://www.econtalk.org/archives/2011/11/taubes_on_fat_s.html), and a few days ago at Taubes on Why We Get Fat (http://www.econtalk.org/archives/2012/07/taubes_on_why_w.html). Those are hour-long interviews.

Here's a shorter interview, that captures the heart of the matter, at How the Government Makes You Fat - Gary Taubes on Obesity, Carbs, and Bad Science (http://reason.com/blog/2012/07/19/reasontv-how-the-government-makes-you-fa):

My interest is more how politics, government and business and even science itself, distorts science, similar to the way alarmists do with climate change.

If you're not familiar with his work, you'll hear some startling things I assume.

I thought salt, sugar, fat and cholesterol were the 4 food groups.

I'm a big proponent of low carbs.

Yeah, if you eat right, don't smoke or drink and get plenty of exercise, you'll get to spend an extra 3 years in the nursing home. Personally, I can hardly wait.

Maybe...depends on whether we can get rid of ACA or not.

The only way I have successfully lost weight is low carbs. I'm 60 years old, 5' 7" and weigh 138 lbs.

It is not a diet but a lifestyle change....forever.

Very interesting stuff, Chris. Thx for posting this vid. Everybody notices how they tell us one thing is bad for us and we should avoid it... then 6 mos later, a little every day won't hurt us.

But I've never thought of it as the giant govt snowball of bad info it really is. Very enlightening. ;)

Atkins was right and they made fun of him for years. The government pyramid of nutrition is a joke and will make you fat. Wonder if Moochelle knows that?

Smartmouthwoman, thanks, thought it might be an interesting topic. I don't know much about it actually, other than the older I get the fatter I get.

I'm assuming choosemyplate.gov is brought to us, at our expense, by our fashion-savvy, boob belted FLOTUS.

I'm very serious about this. I limit my carbs to about 50-75 grams per day.

The government food pyramid is based off the "nutrition" for beef cattle on industrial sized factory farms. It is a recipe for obesity and type II diabetes. Their new plate model is no better.

Aktins problem was that he didn't consider the quality of the fat source.

Add that in, and he was dead on.

If you want to loose weight get rid of the fruit, grains, and eat more protein, fat, and veggies.

If you are in shape then add in grains like brown rice.

If you are in competition mode you can do more stuff.

He didn't care where you got your meat from. Processed, corn fed, grass fed. He didn't care. That was his only flaw.

Well I just buy meat and I have no idea whether it is grass or corn fed...having said that this year thee won't be much corn fed...because of the drought.

The source of fat and protein is critical. It has to do with the proper balance of omega fatty acids.

What difference does it make whether corn fed or grass fed?

How much omega fatty acids are in beef?

If you aren't paying attention I imagine you are getting corn fed beef. I would suggest actively looking for grass fed beef.

It depends on where you get your beef.

http://www.mercola.com/beef/health_benefits.htm

It is all about the ratio of the various trasnfatty acids.

You can order grass fed beef- and other things like ostrich off the internet. Eating corn fed animals is a health risk and you are better off skipping it - allowing one big meal a month. It all has to do with the ration of omega 3 and 6.

But I don't want to get into an argument about nutrition. Eat anything you wish.

I do too now after the bad report from my blood test. Never had this before, maybe it's age.:undecided:

Do believe that the more you eat as a child the more you want. If the child is not active you will get an overweight child that will have trouble when they get older. I portioned my kids food as my mom did ours. None of mine are overweight and I kept them in activities. Mom didn't have to, we lived on a small farm and I walked a lot, played outside, worked and was into sports but she still did. I have never been over 125lbs 5'7 and never worried about what I eat except now with the heart conditions that ran in my family.

If you aren't paying attention I imagine you are getting corn fed beef. I would suggest actively looking for grass fed beef.We eat deer meat almost exclusively. They get a little corn, but mostly they eat grass, wild berries and grapes, and acorns.

The meat is very lean and we have it ground into mostly hamburger, a little cube steak and slices for jerky. I like it that I know the meat we eat is natural and lived on my land. WE take four every year and still we run out of meat by July. We'll be upping our take to 5/year now.

I love beef, but it's a rare treat.
