View Full Version : NEW! tPF Discussion Room

Chris
07-04-2015, 10:36 AM
We would like to create a new experimental area for serious discussion called tPF Discussion Room. By serious discussion we mean making meaningful contributions to the topic at hand free of flamebait trolling, off-topic distractions and personal attacks

We welcome all tPF members who are interested in participating.

Initially, VIPs and Mods will be members of the tPF Discussion Group. Group members can ask a mod to set up a private room where members can discuss and vote anonymously on adding new members--a 75% vote within a week decides. So PM a group member if you'd like to join. Removal from the group will be similar, a group member will request a mod set it up without the one up for removal.

The tPF Discussion Group will be self-moderated, with moderators only stepping in when needed.

If you have questions, please ask here.

The new room can be found here: http://thepoliticalforums.com/forums/57-tPF-Discussion-Forum

You can be invoited or you can PM anyone who posts there--for now any VIP or Mod. We'd like to do it by PM. Then the group votes.

What's probably, maybe likely to happen is that members will correlate with VIP's. So if someone isn't selected as a VIP then they're not likely to be selected as a serious discussion group member except in cases of close voting where mods may be able to swing the vote.

That's the math that I figure.

There's a whole big wide open forum for that, so there's no exclusion. This is just one small area where people can hope to have serious discussion sans flamebait trolling, off-topic distractions and personal attacks. Over time the members of this forum area will define expectations and enforce them. It's worth a try.

I, er, we understand that too and thought of it when discussing and developing the idea. We emphasized posting behavior over personality. But there's really no way to control that. If it becomes a popularity contest I'll be the first to stop using it.

We are hoping that everyone who votes, does so in an adult and fair minded fashion. We don't want an echo chamber of friends, we just want a place where the members know that it's not the mods that are generally going to keep the peace but their fellow members, and that will only happen if everyone behaves like an adult. If a member of that forum acts like a jerk, then his/her fellow members will vote him/her off the island.

I don't mean to complain about the vip function, I honestly don't care, but I see it playing out like that. You'll see some popular yet otherwise unspectacular and or inactive people in it, and you'll some solid posters omitted for whatever reason, be it lack of popularity or oversight.

I'd just like to reiterate that I have no gripes with not being a VIP, these are just some concerns and observations that come to mind. I'm not even implying myself as one of the people who may have been overlooked.

It is a solid concept though and if it goes through I hope it works as intended.

It really has nothing to do with VIP's, we were just added as members from the get go. The intent is just to have somewhere we can debate serious issues without the distractions, personal insults and trolling that is so prevalent on the main forum. I would hope than any member that is capable of serious discussion will be included.

Although I wasn't involved in the decision-making process of creating this new forum area, I would like to take this opportunity to mention what I believe is a key distinction regarding V.I.P.s.

Members in the new forum will be expected to post in a more substantive manner, but their activity outside of that forum will not be held to the same standard. V.I.P.s, on the other hand, are asked to be model posters throughout tPF, and also to take responsibility as forum leaders to propose new ideas (such as the creation of this new forum). We have had many popular members who preferred to be able to post without restrictions, and others who simply didn't have the time or the interest to be involved in running the forum. So, while questions will inevitably be raised as to why "Member X" hasn't been made a V.I.P., it often isn't a result of a popularity contest. Rather, it may well be because the member was approached and the invitation to join the V.I.P. group was declined.

Troll

In Internet slang, a troll is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people, by posting inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a newsgroup, forum, chat room, or blog) with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.

This folks is why. Pugilistic posting is fun, that's fine, but there needs to be a mix with more serious discussion, so we're setting aside one* area for it, the rest of the forum won't change, and there's always the Hole.

You do have to apply by PM to a current member of the group. Then a poll is set up that is only visible to those eligible to vote. No one knows how anyone votes....only the totals. The numbers will be not be revealed to the general forum. The applicant will be notified if they were accepted. No one will know who applied except those who can vote (members of the discussion group).

The system is set up to avoid embarrassment or harsh feelings for everyone.

Again, the process of getting in works like this: A group member can invite another and if they're interested put them up for vote. Any forum member can request joining simply by sending a group member a PM and then you will be put up for vote.

If you want to recommend someone, that's fine, but make sure they're interested--not everyone is. Just ask them--but then the person might as well send a PM himself.

If you don't know any group member well enough, send me a PM and I'll put you in for a vote.

75% yes votes gets you in.

Votes could take a week. That's just a standard we use in the VIP room. Not everyone votes, so it's 75% of those who do vote.

Feel free to ask questions.

This is an area / idea / platform in which there is no personal freedom for expression. Every time I peruse them they turn into a kinda circle jerk. I will grant there are real limits to free speech and the constitution, but those limits are difficult to define and sometimes we have to tolerate speech we find offensive and hopefully can counter for the thoughtful. Some simply don't like that you disagree with them and then cry like a child or ban you from the conversation. Some feel only a pretentious serious reply is necessary. Bah humbug I say. PS I will not participate in an area I find contrary to our American values of openness.

Thanks Pol. Another member had graciously offered to recommend me but I after I originally agreed , I have asked them to hold off after reading your link. I strongly dislike the "popularity contest" admission criteria and will likely not be able to get past that
