Mule Skinner Blues was the first recording I remember hearing.

It was written and recorded by Jimmie Rodgers in 1930 as "Blue Yodel #8" and later renamed.

The opening lyrics came from Tom Dickson's 1928 "Labor Blues"...

Roy Acuff covered it in 1939...

And so did Bill Monroe...

Many other's covered it. I kind of like this one by Merle Haggard...

But I've never found the recording I first heard.

Not that old! :old:

The year was probably around 1960 I first heard it, at a friend's, from his dad's collection, a 45. We would play it again and again, rolling around laughing about the yodelling.

Was the first music I'd heard. For Christmas years earlier I got a radio kit with headphones I listened to late at night, Elvis, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry.
