Ok im officially to old to understand this new world I live in.

How in gods name could anyone even consider allowing NON CITIZENS to vote in official american elections. Do you realize what that implies? that anyone can com this kind of idiot dangerous thinking.

District of Columbia council members voiced their support Wednesday for a new law that would allow non-citizens to vote in local elections.

“These are residents who are well on their paths to citizenship,” Councilman David Grosso said. “Unfortunately not all of our residents have a say in the politicians who are elected to represent them.”
The bill (http://lims.dccouncil.us/Download/33251/B21-0028-Introduction.pdf) would allow permanent residents in the city who are not American citizens to vote in elections for mayor, city council, the attorney general and State Board of Education members, among other things.

“They are our neighbors and our friends and they want to see our city flourish, yet they have no say in how the city’s government is run,” said Councilwoman Elissa Silverman.
Silverman went on to say that nearly one in eight D.C. citizens are immigrants, but only about 30 percent of them are American citizens, and that “all long-term residents of a city should have a right to have a choice in who represents them.”

If the city wants to do it...isn't it their right? We're talking local city elections and not to illegal aliens or visitors, but to those with permanent resident status who are on their way to citizenship.

No not as far as im concerned, this is AMERICA and citizens and only citizens should be allowed to vote

You would allow or want ILLEGAL immigrants to vote ? American felons cant vote and they want to give non citizens the right to vote without knowing their background ?

This is scrounging for votes at its absolute worse

Who said anything about illegal immigrants?

Did you read the article? It's permanent residents.

I understand it's AMERICA.

I don't necessarily agree with the idea. But if the city wants to do it, shouldn't they be allowed to? We're not talking about federal or even state elections, btw. Nor are we talking about illegal immigrants.

States rights! States rights! States rights!

DC is not a state.

It it falls directly under the jurisdiction of Congress so they don't have aright to do whatever they please.

It's true that congress can overturn any laws they wish in the district.

I agree in general it is a local issue. But as said above, Congress can overturn any DC law it wishes.

And what is the problem with that? If the Democrats want to give the Snapping turtle the right to vote in a state, that should be their right. Now that should not effect anyone's free speech rights to bitch about it.
