Meet State Rep Wesley Bishop who has the crazy notion that maybe if New Orleans schools taught comprehensive sex ed, the city might actually scream a bit less when it pees.

:D

“Since I figured it wouldn’t pass statewide, I thought we had a better chance to do it just in the city of New Orleans,” Bishop told ThinkProgress from his office at Southern University New Orleans, where he is associate vice chancellor for academic affairs. “We have a lot of exceptions in Louisiana law just for the city of New Orleans. If the rest of the state wants to stick their head in the sand and doesn’t want to move on it, that’s one thing,” he said. “But we think that this is what we need to try to move forward. So as a city we stepped out there to try to get that done. It did not work, but we’re going to try again and again and again. Because something has to give.”

They teach the gals there how to do that in 7th grade. Might be part of the problem.

Nice try - No banana

Just as high concentrations of blacks in many northern cities.

The abstinence only states rule the roost on both teen pregnancies and STDs.

Perhaps it is a parenting issue in a shit culture that is all about instant gratification, damn the consequences. I did part of my growing up in a black home and none of this stereotypical bullshit was there. We never see the best of people or normal people on the web or the news.

Notice they generally pick some idiot to interview on the news, no matter the race.

Yeah, the problem is that southern, socially conservative parents SAY that they will teach their kids about contraception and safe sex but they DON'T. Guess they're too embarrassed by it.

Hey, i got mine in SoCal in the 6th grade. In my view, it is one of the jobs of public education. If they want to recommend abstinence as part of that .. fine. But all by itself?

Failure.

States ranked by rates of abortion among women age 15-19 (pregnancies per thousand):

New Jersey (47)
New York (46)
Maryland (38)
Nevada (36)
California (36)
Hawaii (34)
Florida (33)
Delaware (31)
Connecticut (30)
Illinois (27)

Only two of the above rank in the top ten states with the highest teenage pregnancy rates of young women age 15-19. They are Nevada (ranked first with 113 pregnancies per thousand) and California (ranked seventh with 96 pregnancies per thousand).

I wonder what all this means...and what is being left out. How can Louisiana be highest in teen pregnancy....and then we have these figures.

Honestly based on this material below, I don't know how your source can make the claims it does when the data does not exist.

I was not aware that babies were dying in the USA I would be opposed to that. I was also not aware that Abortion was illegal anywhere in the USA. I think that I will move there.

More teen pregnancies are purposeful than you think. A ticket out so to speak.

The problem is a lot of parents don't want to parent their children and it becomes the problem of public schools. I support teaching proper sex education because parents are becoming increasingly less involved in their children's lives as they work more, including working from home via smart phone or computer. Even if 1/3, hypothetically, of a class has parents who actually do want to be involved that still leaves a large group of children who need and require the school system to make up for absentee parents.

If I could get a guarantee that every parent would parent their children and do the research to see the most effective way to have the "talk", then I'd support the largely conservative push to not allow sex education taught in public schools. As it is, parents are not doing their jobs and someone needs to.

This is similar to the earlier thread about censorship of books in public libraries. Some parents want to control what books their children have access to....which I agree with. However, I believe it is the parent's responsibility to know what their children are reading. Its not the responsibility of the library (or school) to enforce parental religious beliefs.

Abstinence is not a bad thing and I can totally understand why parents would want to push that onto their teenage kids, however, abstinence only education is insufficient and more dangerous in my opinion. It's ok to teach kids about sex in a responsible and respectful way.

I live in the southern area of Illinois, a blue state. Most all of the counties vote red except for Cook county and a few others similar but smaller. That pretty much explains it. It reminds me of the reality that the ten big cities most in trouble financially are all run by democrats! It's quite comparable to the OP.

The biggest problem with abstinence only programs is that eventually some of the kids break their pledge. They are subject to higher pregnancy and STD rates than those who received more comprehensive education. Abstinence is 100% effective until its not.
