View Full Version : tPF Discussion Room Change

We have listened to a lot of member input about the new discussion area and group. Some said it was exclusive, some said voting was a popularity contest, and some asked why not stricter moderation? Based on member input, we have decided to open tPF Discussion up to all, do away with voting, and give members control over it.

It will work as follows:

Post a thread in the tPF Discussion Forum (http://thepoliticalforums.com/forums/57-tPF-Discussion-Forum). We ask that you select the prefix "tPFD: " so members know what they are. Mods can edit titles if needed.

If you are the thread starter, you can request moderators to thread ban those who you feel are engaging in flamebait trolling, off-topic distractions and personal attacks. All the you need to do is report a post, ask for a thread ban, and give your reason. It will be done and made clear in the offending post. These thread bans will not be counted as infractions.

It will still be moderated as any other part of the forum based on forum rules. The theme is still to try to develop a place for serious discussion. By serious discussion we mean making meaningful contributions to the topic at hand free of flamebait trolling, off-topic distractions and personal attacks.

Some points to clarify some misunderstandings:

We will not move existing threads to tPFD.
Only OPs can request TBs in tPFD.
There are no pre-emptive TBs.
Mods will simply post that the OP has requested TB.
Keep in mind, most importantly, tPFD is member-run.

Sounds like a much better idea. JPP has something akin to this, called Above Plain Politics. However, given the forum is 98% trolls, its a wasteland. :)

There ya go home run, this is the right way, every forum participant has the opportunity to participate and that participation is based on their behavior and ability to maintain civility. If they cant they get the boot and they have no one to blame but themselves. PERFECT!!!!!!

Whoever was key to bringing forth this new outline is to be complimented.

I think the idea to be able to thread ban someone from a thread you start originated with Chloe, but this change in general was driven by member complaints. Chris did majority of the work in drafting this, with input from the moderation team on how would be the best way to adjust the discussion forum and then also the VIPs gave input. Team effort, but I'd say it's sort of Chloe's idea and Chris did the task of writing up various drafts of what we wanted to change the forum to. ADMIN was also very helpful in several ways.

Even though I signed up for this Board in 2012 I haven't been posting until recently and I see this new feature
as a good thing.

As I see it...it's not about whether you agree, disagree or have an added comment regarding the topic.

Well, I had my first and last post in that forum. The process doesn't work when trolls can have at it and fuck up the discussion right out of the gate. And I get mods aren't on 24/7 and I'm not blaming them, but it doesn't work.

It also doesn't work when, when they're finally threadbanned they just go and start the exact same thread.

So that's all I need to see of this new forum. Does not deliver.

I don't see the problem. Troll trolls, gets banned, discussion continues course. It can only be derailed if the trolling persists. It beats the hell out of the old process where non VIP veteran posters like myself, CO, Mister D, etc, are presumed guilty from the start and are subject to a vote where we could be judged in part by inactive posters and people that probably shouldn't have their spot.

That's not sour grapes either, I was voted in the forum but declined, it's the principle.

I am not whining. I am just calling it like it is.

The tPF feature is for people who cannot otherwise hold their own in a discussion with other adults. I can't imagine anyone with any measure of self respect or self confidence having to result to its use. It is for the weak and feeble minded. If I was whining, I would suggest it was somehow unfair or something along those lines. I am doing nothing of the sort. This is supposedly an opinion board (well, except when you get Thread Banned in a tPF thread for having a different opinion), and I am expressing my opinion.

Use it as often as you want. I will never suggest you shouldn't. I might however, comment on why you might want to use it. Make every thread a tPF thread if you want. That way the thread starters can shut down anyone they please.

I have asked several times who it was who initially proposed that feature and no one here has seen fit to answer my question. I believe it probably because deep down inside, whoever it was knows why he or she did so and knows that public acknowledgement of it would only result in revealing exactly why the feature was suggested.

Whoever it was deserves only contempt.

That isn't really the point, is it?

I don't expect you to understand this, but discussion boards are supposed to be for discussion, not self gratification or self aggrandizement. A thread, once posted, doesn't "belong" to anyone. As long as there no violations of actual forum rules, people should be able to respond to comments in that thread in whatever way they see fit. If there is a violation of forum rules, it should up to the Moderators to intervene, make corrections, issue reprimands or do whatever it is that needs to be done to get the thread back on track. The person who started the thread should have nothing to say about it at that point. If you are going to have that feature, you should just get rid of all the Mods and fix the forum software so that whoever starts a thread has absolute control over it. That would be a stupid idea, but no more stupid than what you have done with this feature. They are both discussion killers.

We have posted the tPF rules and they don't include any that the Mods don't enforce in any other thread. The only difference is that the OP is watching their own thread. We had a few growing pains with this, but at the end of the day, only the forum rules apply. The only major difference is that the OP can request that you be thread banned for breaking the rules and we must oblige, whereas in a non-tPF thread we as Mods are trying not to alienate anyone, so we typically give people more chances to behave. Digest that and then consider how your politics fit with the notion of the tPF.

You are not required to participate in tPF threads. I'm quite amazed that the same people who most vociferously defend the rights of others in the 3D world their right of association, cannot see the parallel in the tPF. It would imply that those highly defended rights are acceptable when they don't affect you, but when they do, all bets are off.
