A woman who lied about spotting two suspicious men sent nearly 100 officers on a wild goose chase in the hunt for three cop killers, stalling the investigation by hours, Illinois police said early Thursday.
Kristin B. Kiefer, 30, told police two men tried to steal her car after she pulled over with car trouble along Route 12 in Volo, about five miles outside of Fox Lake, Lake County Sheriff Sgt. Chris Covelli said.
The attention-seeking Vernon Hills woman claimed the men, who had approached from a nearby cornfield, ran off when she picked up her phone to call police.
