The Times story then duly repeats statistics offered by the CCR’s assistant legal director, Christopher Dunn. “In 2010, city officers made more street stops — 601,055 — than in any previous 12-month period.” Proving what exactly? The story editorializes: “As a practical matter, the stops display a measurable racial disparity: Black and Hispanic people generally represent more than 85 percent of those stopped by the police, though their combined populations make up a small share of the city’s racial composition.”

Okay. Are there any other relevant statistics here? The story does cite Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly’s position that “the racial breakdown of the stops correlates to the racial breakdown of crime suspects.” But no sooner does the story allude to the elephant in the room than it takes issue with the NYPD, warning that the rising number of stops is “bringing the practice under increasing scrutiny from lawmakers [none is quoted], academics [ditto], the Center for Constitutional Rights and the New York Civil Liberties Union.”

Snip

Blacks committed 66 percent of all violent crimes in the first half of 2009 (though they were only 55 percent of all stops and only 23 percent of the city’s population). Blacks committed 80 percent of all shootings in the first half of 2009. Together, blacks and Hispanics committed 98 percent of all shootings. Blacks committed nearly 70 percent of all robberies. Whites, by contrast, committed 5 percent of all violent crimes in the first half of 2009, though they are 35 percent of the city’s population (and were 10 percent of all stops). They committed 1.8 percent of all shootings and less than 5 percent of all robberies.

Who needs facts at the treason times, these people aren't interested in facts. Only 23% of the population means blacks ain't got it so bad. I think writers like this are part of the democratic machine that wants a dem mayor. I've seen the pattern way too often for it to be coincidence, the math is way too off to be a mistake.

If racial profiling is so bad in NYC then why is it that MSDNC isn't covering it and where is Al Sharptongue? Guess I'll see more when the mayor race starts up

Seems like they have a Dem mayor. ;) Bloomberg doesn't pass for an east coast conservative like Guiliani.

The whole racial profiling gripe is pure bunk.

Agreed, even dem mayor Ed Koch was more conservative than Bloomberg. Some of these east coast conservatives have too much in common with dems. Bush Sr. and Dubya had a lot in common with dems.

Too many blacks identify with the socialist mentality that no one should bother them ever. Too tribal and the dems have fed them lies and given them creed to be more like their African counter parts. I was pulled over for no tag lights Wednesday night, no ticket no big deal, a black would have huffed that he was singled out because of skin color. Those types also believe black cops are out to get them, even without racial tensions which are non-existent they still resist authority and the opportunists side with them regardless of the facts or fault.

http://www.hartford-hwp.com/archives/45a/555.html
In recent decades, police departments in Chicago and other large urban areas have recruited minorities in earnest, partly out of a sense of fairness, sometimes under duress, but also in hopes of improving relationships with and services in the communities they are sworn to protect.

But if there was an expectation that increasing the diversity of the force would help break down barriers between police and the minority community, those efforts have had an unexpected effect.

Some African-Americans say that while white cops are at times abusive and insensitive, black cops sometimes seem even worse. Meanwhile, black officers say they have been put in the difficult position of straddling the line between personal and professional allegiance when dealing with people of their own race.

"The statement I hear all the time is ’I would expect that from a white officer, not from a brother,’ " said Officer Isaac Lee, a 10-year veteran of the Chicago police and part of a special unit that patrols the "hot spots" in the city’s public housing developments. "Like what, I’m suppose to overlook your crime because we are both black?"

"I personally think black officers are held to a higher standard because as blacks policing blacks, oftentimes there is the feeling from black civilians that since they have been so historically downtrodden by white police, we should go easier on them… . We should understand their plight."

The often strained relationship between black officers and black civilians has brought daily tensions. But in recent weeks, the situation has become even more difficult in the wake of two fatal shootings by Chicago police. In both instances, the victims were black. So were the officers involved.

The shootings have sparked protests outside City Hall and police headquarters. They have prompted cries of brutality and questions about police tactics. One of the shootings—that of 26-year-old LaTanya Haggerty—prompted Police Supt. Terry Hillard last week to recommend that the four officers involved in the June 4 incident be dismissed.

Customarily, such incidents also would have brought questions about whether they indicated an inherent racism in the Police Department because the officers typically were white.

Yet the circumstances surrounding the fatal shootings by police of Haggerty and Robert Russ—a 22-year-old Northwestern student—have put black community leaders in the unusual position of criticizing police conduct they can’t simply attribute to a racist culture in the Police Department.

Rev. Jesse Jackson said the two incidents amounted to police resorting to an excessive use of force.

"It is so easy when you are on a job where oftentimes the civilians are as well armed or better armed than the police to get in a defensive mode," Jackson said. "But once you get yourself in the mode where you feel like you have to defend yourself against the people instead of protecting the people, you need a break… . Those types of people are too quick with the stick and the trigger finger."

"Your fears cannot justify breaking the law," even if you are the police, Jackson said.

I just read em online and pick and choose the articles I want. All for free though, but they have ads on the website. I'll read anything if it is a good article, I don't care if it is in the NYT, the WSJ, or whatever. Just because I have a different opinion doesn't mean I can't learn something. The NYT has good stuff like any paper just my opinion. Also it is too rough to use for wiping that I am sure of ;)

Ten years ago, TIME listed its choice of the ten best newspapers in the U.S. In alphabetical order, they were: the Baltimore Sun, Cleveland Press, Los Angeles Times, Louisville Courier-Journal, Milwaukee Journal, Minneapolis morning Tribune, New York Daily News, New York Times, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and the Washington Post. Reviewing the nation's major dailies today, TIME correspondents and editors found marked change; five of the 1964 selections have been replaced by other papers that have improved sharply.

These ten papers stand out, in TIME'S view, for several reasons. They make a conscientious effort to cover national and international news as well as to monitor their own communities. They can be brash and entertaining as well as informative. They are willing to risk money, time and manpower on extended investigations. Through "Op-Ed" pages and dissenting columns they offer a range of disparate opinion. TIME made its selections on the basis of editorial excellence rather than commercial success, but economically these papers range from the sound to the very prosperous.

Also The Chicago Tribune is a paper I would say that is Fair and balanced. and has been long before there was a Fox TV.
