They say a picture is worth a thousand words. People post pictures online all the time. I figured we might as well have a central place to post our thoughts...on anything...political or not.

I'll start us off with a few images I've collected online.

These first two are self-explanatory.

Now let's imagine for a moment that Jesus' followers were Tea Party evangelists:

Regarding the last pic. If Jesus feeds everyone it is charity. Socialism is when the government slams its jack-boot on my neck to take my money to feed others.

Concerning Jesus, I think you're all a little confused. Christ and his earliest followers, in terms of their lifestyles, can be described as nothing but out and out communists. (Lifestyle communists, not political communists.) The Bible itself records that they lived by sharing their possessions in common. I'm not saying that I'm a Christian or anything or that I think the primitive type of organization the early Christians applied is a good one for modern-day people. I'm just saying that it's ridiculous for people to use Christ as some sort of mouthpiece for the capitalist system, as though he were a business tycoon of some sort.

How much of the taxpayer's money did Jesus use to heal the sick and feed the hungry?

With all due respect, Jesus and his followers willingly lived the way they lived. They did not create a government, and then use the power of the government to force people to live in any certain way. That is the entire point of what conservatives believe. Why can't liberals get that point? If their ideas are so good why must government mandate them?

Mises, Socialism: An Economic and Sociological Analysis: Chapter 29 Christianity and Socialism: 6 Christian Socialism (http://oll.libertyfund.org/?option=com_staticxt&staticfile=show.php%3Ftitle=1060&chapter=104087&layout=html&Itemid=27), distinguishes thus: "We often find the Apostolic Fathers and the Fathers of the Church, exhorting their followers to return to the communism of the first congregation, but this is always a communism of consumption. They never recommend the socialistic organization of production."

The left is confused. Naturally, their solution is to confuse the rest of us to make themselves feel secure.

Part of the problem might be those who deny the divinity of Jesus- they won't understand Jesus's purpose- to save our immortal souls. To them he was just a hippie pushing social justice- a community agitator if you will. Then they think- more government is the answer, man. Take another toke....

Jesus taught more on money than anything else. He also taught about being a good steward of money. All the riches in the universe belong to God. God is the big capitalist in the sky.

And now...another bonus picture I'll have to link to because it won't fit. (http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/548022_512027882147201_2107685282_n.jpg) You KNEW I had to reference The Hunger Games SOMEWHERE in here since it just came out on video! This was my favorite pic from the official countdown. It was posted a number of weeks ago.

(On another note, Chris asks: "What's lifestyle communism?" It's what it sounds like: collectivist principles you apply as a personal lifestyle with a group of others, as opposed to trying to make such things legally binding (and thus political). Hippie communes are an example of lifestyle communism. Just to answer that question.)

How does one apply collectivism personally?

Ayn Rand on collectivism:
Collectivism means the subjugation of the individual to a group—whether to a race, class or state does not matter. Collectivism holds that man must be chained to collective action and collective thought for the sake of what is called “the common good.”
~“The Only Path to Tomorrow,” Reader’s Digest, Jan, 1944, 8.

Collectivism holds that, in human affairs, the collective—society, the community, the nation, the proletariat, the race, etc.—is the unit of reality and the standard of value. On this view, the individual has reality only as part of the group, and value only insofar as he serves it.

Still doesn't make the oxymoron meaningful. Collectivism negates the individual person. Now if that's not the case in your utopian vision, then your vision is not collectivist but something else.

A case can likely be made for that, as there is some evidence that he was Essene, which was a commune-minded group at the time. Another case could be made for his being the original libertarian.;)

It's equally absurd to refer to a 1st Century Palestinian Jew as a communist. Moreover, no one does what you describe.

Marxism and communism are separable things. Marxism is a particular communist theory (or range of theories). No one is suggesting that Christ was a Marxist (obviously!). Communism refers to the common ownership of property, which the referenced "1st Century Palestinian Jew(s)" employed, at least according to the Bible itself.

They may very well be separable things but why you think that's even remotely relevant is unclear. It's an absurd anachronism to refer to a 1st Century Palestinian Jew as a communist or a Marxist. Unless of course we want to empty language of its meaning. Sure, Jesus was a communist. A communist is a religious teacher.

True, but they're joined at the hip as branches of socialism, just as are Nazism and Fascism...and Social Democracy.

I'm just saying that it's ridiculous for people to use Christ as some sort of mouthpiece for the capitalist system, as though he were a business tycoon of some sort.

so why do you keep harping for separation of church and state. Make up that narrow little mind.

President Lincoln did not free a single slave in the U.S. He freed slaves ina foreign country. Slaves in the U.S. had to wait for the Constitutional Amendment. That's why the last actual slave in the White House was the property of President Grant's family.

You clearly are not a Christian and are completely clueless about the Bible.

Yes, it says things like that.....but..

Oh, what's the use.....even if you DID read it, you simply would not understand that it had nothing to do with taxation and wealth distribution.

I hate ignorance

Who said it did? I didn't. I merely highlighted the life-style choices that Christ prescribed for his followers and poked fun at how radically different the mentality of ye standard American social conservative who claims to uphold Christ's legacy is.

The early Christians were pretty much preparing for the end of the world right away, anticipating that the end would come within their own generation. Hence there was no point in bothering with politics or in trying to amass wealth or what have you. All that mattered to these people was being a good person and a committed proselytizer.

If you really wanted it to be funny you would change the word Republican to Democrat so that there is a kernel of truth in the joke. Republicans give to charities at far higher rates than Dems. Dems figure higher taxes will cover it.

So if we "re-settle" homeless people to empty properties, what next? What if they have no opportunities for jobs.

In the 1990s there was a movement to provide a 1 time welfare benefit to the poor: a decent place to live, 100% free. No other benefit ever. Is this similar to what you are proposing?

A socialist distribution could certainly unite the homeless with homes! The most common problem that has plagued (planned) socialist economies was that of product shortages. Well clearly there is no shortage of housing units in today's America, so that's not an issue here. All we have to do to resolve homelessness in America today is move people into homes. That CAN be done.

Classic way to have tranportation and home all in one. Not that expensive either. Add some solarpanels when they finally become cheap, and you got it made.

With all due respect, Jesus and his followers willingly lived the way they lived. They did not create a government, and then use the power of the government to force people to live in any certain way. That is the entire point of what conservatives believe. Why can't liberals get that point? If their ideas are so good why must government mandate them?

Maybe you should inform the Barbara Bachmanns and Sarah Palins in the Republican party, of your sentiments, since their idea of the Constitution is that Christianity should be a government sanctioned religion, preferably declared the national religion. Worse than that, if that is not bad enough, is their idea that a religion should be given authority by the state.

It's a satirical commentary that highlights the more-than-hypocritical nature of Israel's complaints about Gaza. As usual, they started this whole conflict in the first place, then complained about its consequences and used them as an excuse for an extensive bombing campaign, to be followed up (we now know) by a full-scale ground invasion. This will be the second such invasion in under four years' time. They do these sorts of things all the time, on a remarkably routine basis. And they always claim to be the victims. Sell that to someone else.

Grassroots Conservative wrote:

I don't oppose Israel per se. I support a two-state solution to the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. But I'm not stupid. While both sides of this conflict have faults, it's obvious which side has a whole lot more. Over the generations, Israel has been systematically eliminating all Palestinian territory with a steady expansion of settlements and outright conquests that we never challenge and rarely even question. What they're doing vis-a-vis the Palestinian people is, in other words, analogous to what we did vis-a-vis the Native American people in what is today the United States. No, I'm afraid I don't turn a blind eye to blatant colonialism or try to offer pathetic rationalizations for it. If there is to be a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict then Israel needs to stop being an aggressor. That's the main source of the problem, and indeed of the region's problems.

I know there's this huge cultural taboo on criticizing Israel in this country, but...seriously!!

I was not aware of that. I don't believe that is their goal. I do wish they would leave those issues at the State level.
