‘Love’ is overdoing it a bit. Do I admire him? Yes.
I admire him for his nationalism, standing up to the EU and NATO, getting stuck into ISIS instead of of the usual western outrage . . . I think he’s everything Obama and the majority of weak western leaders are not.

Is that a love for Putin (as in they want Putin in charge of them) or is that respect for a leader that actually advocates for his own people's interests?

Two different things.

As far as Buchanan goes, from everything that I know about him, he would not tolerate Putin in charge of the US. But he respects Putin's style of governance over his own people. The Russians.

Buchanan would prefer another Reagan to govern the US (never a Putin). Reagan zealously defended the American concept, unlike recent American presidents.

I think that is the analogy you intended to make.
