View Full Version : Jack-O-Lanterns cause climate change?

Is our federal government now a real live SNL skit? Jack-O-Lanterns actually contribute to the hoax of global warming, or climate change? Really? Is this what government has morphed into?
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2015/oct/28/pumpkins-cause-climate-change-energy-department/
How scary are your jack-o’-lanterns? Scarier than you think, according to the Energy Department (http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/united-states-department-of-energy/), which claims the holiday squash is responsible for unleashing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
Most of the 1.3 billion pounds of pumpkins produced in the U.S. end up in the trash, says (http://energy.gov/articles/turn-your-halloween-pumpkins-power) the Energy Department (http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/united-states-department-of-energy/)’s website, becoming part of the “more than 254 million tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) produced in the United States every year.”

it certainly would be nice, if we cannot consume the pumpkins for their nutrients ,that we at least compost them rather than dumping them into an already overburdened solid waste stream.

You should be holding a cigar captain.
The raising and lowering of temperature over the Atlantic Ocean is having the greatest effect. This can be corrected by keeping all vessels off and out of Atlantic waters for a period of 32years & 15days. This has been proven to work after a study done this summer. Congress should do an up or down vote on a bill that will be put forth soon. There will be no need to read or amend this bill.

When Halloween is over and if you have pumpkins then you should break them up and compost them or use them in a productive way for your property instead of being wasteful and just throwing them away to go to a dump. Think about the hundreds of thousands if not millions of pumpkins that will be sent to landfills. It's similar to Christmas trees. When Christmas is over you can use those trees as mulch for your flower beds or even make something out of the wood instead of throwing it into the trash to go take up more space at a landfill. We do not need to add more waste to what we already produce. Find a reusable purpose for it.

In a composter, the pumpkin would not undergo anaerobic decomposition as it would in a landfill site, but rather aerobic decomposition. Anaerobic decomposition generates methane due to a lack of oxygen, a situation which occurs in landfill sites when tons of waste are densely piled and never turned as they would be in a properly managed compost pile or composter. Turning compost continues to introduce air and allows for insects and worms to break down the organic matter.

I have to ask. When a person says, "thank you for your service". What's your first thought? Is it a bother? Especially when that person intones the statement in a way that seems disingenuous. I've always wondered if a veteran prefers to keep his service personal and shared only with his fellow veteran brothers?

No, it is not a bother, but I am uncomfortable with people thanking me for serving in the military. I usually respond by saying "no, thank you for allowing someone as unworthy as me to serve in our armed forces".
At a Seahawks game, they asked all vets to stand to be honored. I remained seated. My daughter was not happy with me for doing that.

So, it makes a difference where a pumpkin sits while it rots away?
Well yes it kind of does. It's organic material and can be used to benefit your home garden or decorative flower beds in your yard if it's composted as/with nutrient rich soil. There will be millions of pumpkins dumped into landfills over the weekend and so even if you don't buy into the environmental effects of all that extra organic material being put into a landfill, which is not as compostable and great as you probably think, then at the very least just be less wasteful and find a way to repurpose the pumpkins you bought so that it has a continued benefit after Halloween. Those few pumpkins you bought could help nourish plants that are in your front or back yard by simply taking the time to break them down in a more natural and beneficial way. Just don't contribute to more unnecessary waste if you are able to, that's all.

All I mentioned to you was not to be wasteful and repurpose your pumpkins to benefit your garden or flower bed. Environmental impacts aside, it wasteful to just toss millions of pumpkins into the garbage when they can have another purpose. We waste way too much in our country and this is just another example.

did your tea leaves tell you that, "sarge"?
other opinions on that certainly exist:
https://www.skepticalscience.com/global-warming-scientific-consensus.htm
In the scientific field of climate studies – which is informed by many different disciplines – the consensus is demonstrated by the number of scientists who have stopped arguing about what is causing climate change – and that’s nearly all of them. A survey of 928 peer-reviewed abstracts on the subject 'global climate change' published between 1993 and 2003 shows that not a single paper rejected the consensus position that global warming is man caused (http://www.skepticalscience.com/argument.php?a=24) (Oreskes 2004 (http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/full/306/5702/1686)). A follow-up study by the Skeptical Science team (http://skepticalscience.com/97-percent-consensus-cook-et-al-2013.html) of over 12,000 peer-reviewed abstracts on the subjects of 'global warming' and 'global climate change' published between 1991 and 2011 found that of the papers taking a position on the cause of global warming, over 97% agreed that humans are causing it (Cook 2013 (http://iopscience.iop.org/1748-9326/8/2/024024/article)). The scientific authors of the papers were also contacted and asked to rate their own papers, and again over 97% whose papers took a position on the cause said humans are causing global warming.
I'd note that Pumpkins are edible, compostable, so ' in the trash' is NOT a best outcome. Hardly a "controversy'. Recycle the pumpkin. recycle the Christmas tree too.

Just like Mister Doofus, Tahuyaboy is adept at smearing and ignoring citations. The way this Troll Game is played: (1) demand citations to back up your position; (2) make fun of or otherwise discount those citations; (3) wash, rinse and repeat.
I won't play that little stupid Troll Game. This is keep insisting that Tahuyaboy show HIS sources that prove that pot is bad for your health. But he can't do that, since valid scientific studies (i.e.: ones not funded by NIDA and the DEA, and that have good controls, are peer-reviewed, and have actually been published in reputable journals) that show that don't exist.
