Denmark's prime minister says Bernie Sanders is wrong to call his country socialist (http://www.vox.com/2015/10/31/9650030/denmark-prime-minister-bernie-sanders)

Bernie Sanders has long referred to himself as a socialist rather than a member of the Democratic Party, which has naturally lead to a lot of questions about what socialism means to him. He consistently references the social models of the Nordic states — and especially Denmark — as his idea of what democratic socialism is all about. But in a speech Friday evening at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, Danish Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said that while he's flattered to see Denmark discussed in a widely-watched US presidential debate he doesn't think the socialist shoe fits.

"I know that some people in the US associate the Nordic model with some sort of socialism," he said, "therefore I would like to make one thing clear. Denmark is far from a socialist planned economy. Denmark is a market economy."

In Rasmussen's view, "the Nordic model is an expanded welfare state which provides a high level of security to its citizens, but it is also a successful market economy with much freedom to pursue your dreams and live your life as you wish."

I find it amusing to watch the wriggling. Initially, as socialism is introduced there is the money to fund it and they’re all showing off how socialism works. Eventually, as the money runs out and it all collapses, they deny it’s socialism, but insist that if they had socialism it would work. Strange how it’s never socialism when it collapses, a bit like communism when that also collapses.

A lot of countries like Denmark or the other Scandinavian countries have the same kind of negative connotations with the word "socialist" as Americans have, (although, to less of a degree). They lived next door to the Soviet Union and all the evil shit that happened there. They are democratic socialists, but more likely social democrats if you ask them to identify themselves. Yes, they have a relatively free market but other aspects of their government are inspired by socialist ideals.

The Nordic model seems to be socialized services supported by a fairly free market. Such a mixed system is hardly socialism.

Two things:

1) Bernie said his model would be similar to the Nordic states, not exactly like them.
2) The Danish PM was also refuting conservatives that like to slap the socialist label on everything they don't like.

hat the US could adopt a socialist system by emulating Scandinavia. “I think we should look to countries like Denmark, like Sweden and Norway, and learn from what they have accomplished for their working people,” said the US presidential candidate, who identifies himself as a “democratic socialist.”

Agreed, with both points. The label socialism is sloppily if not sensationally used. And technically, Bernie calls himself a democratic socialist. But he does point to Scandinavia, especially Denmark, as an example of what he wants to do, when he isn't all that much for free markets.

Bernie specifically mentioned Denmark. The PM did not mention conservatives.

Fix the tax system and you won't even have this argument. Incentivize people to work and you won't have this argument. Make policy changes that create real jobs and you won't have this issue.

1) Which does nothing to go against what I said.
2) He also didn't specifically mention Bernie.
