SeaWorld intends to phase out its longstanding killer whale show at its San Diego park next year as part of a comprehensive strategy unveiled Monday to re-position the embattled company amid persistent criticisms of how it treats its orcas.
Next year will be the last for the show and coming in 2017 will be a new orca experience, described as "informative" and designed to take place in a more natural setting, minus the theatrical tricks that have long defined the Shamu shows. The announcement came during a Monday morning webcast led by SeaWorld Entertainment CEO Joel Manby and other senior executives, who discussed a multi-pronged vision for the company and its collection of 11 parks.

So instead of jumping through hoops the orcas will be ______________? Going back to their 30x30x30' holding tanks. Not a life still.

SeaWorld phasing out killer whale shows in San Diego | Fox News (http://www.foxnews.com/travel/2015/11/09/seaworld-phasing-out-killer-whale-shows-in-san-diego/?intcmp=hpffo&intcmp=obnetwork)

SeaWorld said Monday it would phase out its killer whale show at its San Diego park next year – an announcement that comes ahead of proposed federal legislation that would seriously regulate the organization’s interactions with captive and wild orcas.
No mention was made of killer whale shows at SeaWorld’s parks in San Antonio and Orlando.
Monday’s announcement was part of a new strategy to combat criticism leveled at the theme park in the wake of the 2013 documentary “Blackfish,” which condemned SeaWorld for its treatment of Orcas.
The documentary has led to a slippage in SeaWorld’s attendance numbers and, more recently, the Orlando-based company missed Wall Street expectations for its reported third-quarter earnings on Thursday. The company’s stock has climbed slightly more than five percent overall during the last year, however.
While SeaWorld said the familiar killer whale show would be gone, its replacement in 2017 was vaguely described as a new orca experience that will be “informative” and carry a “conservation message inspiring people to act,” according to the San Diego Union-Tribune (http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/2015/nov/09/seaworld-san-diego-phase-out-killer-whale-show/).

But even if the aquatic giant didn’t act, changes were likely in store for SeaWorld.
Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Burbank, is planning to introduce federal legislation prohibiting breeding captive orcas, stopping the capture of wild orcas and ending the import and export of orcas, the Union-Tribune reported.
Schiff said he will introduce the Orca Responsibility and Care Advancement Act to ensure that orcas now at aquatic parks such as SeaWorld are the last ones and that when they die, no other whales will replace them.
"The evidence is very strong that the psychological and physical harm done to these magnificent animals far outweighs any benefits reaped from their display," Schiff said at a news conference in Santa Monica.
SeaWorld says its whales are thriving and the parks foster understanding of the animals.
"While efforts to phase out whales in human care may strike an emotional chord, SeaWorld and other science-based organizations are part of the solution, not the problem," Jill Kermes, a spokeswoman for SeaWorld Entertainment, said in a statement.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Yeah, I think he was advocating replacing the show with sharks.

They need to release every single animal in captivity. Every sea world every zoo.

They see the writing on the wall. They will lose more money in the future by keeping the shows than by getting rid of them. They aren't doing this for the Orcas they are doing this for the PR and to end the purging of lost revenue. I'm fine with whatever justification they want to use though since it is the true beginning of the end for the exploitation of these animals.

From your link - "While SeaWorld said the familiar killer whale show would be gone, its replacement in 2017 was vaguely described as a new orca experience that will be “informative”

Something tells me that instead of the "familiar killer whale show" a new one "vaguely described as a new orca experience" involving the Orca in some way will be coming. Unfortunately the whales will still be penned.

yes but with this coming out, as well as the new laws coming into play that ban breeding and soon to be banning the exporting/importing the days are numbered. The whales currently in captivity will be the last ones to be exploited for entertainment, however, yes, they need to be put into a sea pen or marina sanctuary and not be forced to live out there rest of their lives performing.
