Looked around briefly and I didn't see any threads on this so apologies if someone has already made this thread. I love to listen to podcasts, almost as much as I love finding and hearing new music. Anyone got any good podcasts on politics, philosophy, history, science or religion?

Some that I listen to religiously:

On the Media (NPR)
Point of Inquiry (Center for Skeptical Inquiry)
It's All Politics (NPR)

Some I listen to occasionally:

The Economist: All Audio
StarTalk Radio Show by Neil deGrasse Tyson

http://www.econtalk.org/ Roberts is a great interviewer. He's libertarian/Austrian but interviews a wide variety of people in economics, business, etc.

Yeah, listen to Mike Church podcasts on itunes. Mark Levin's podcast.

Is Levin a religious conservative or a libertarian conservative? I can deal with the latter (mostly because I think they know economics better than liberals) but the former not so much.

I subscribed to Econtalk. I'll give it a listen later.

Also not sure if this is the right thread but I got the Federalist Papers on audiobook for $3 on iTunes. Narrator is pretty good. I have a lot on my reading list, so it's nice to sit back and just take in some new info some times.

You would describe him as libertarian conservative.

Here is his website, all free all past shows.

Bumping for new members.

Econtalk is pretty great. I've listened to about half the episodes since June now. Roberts is a pretty great guy and he doesn't give off the same militant vibe a lot of right wing hosts I've listened to have. Pretty much the perfect host for that show.

Point of Inquiry: Dan Ariely- The Honest Truth About Dishonesty

http://www.pointofinquiry.org/dan_ariely_the_honest_truth_about_dishonesty/

There is no doubt that our world is populated with cheats and liars. Most of us, slaves to the availability heuristic, think of major cheaters like Bernie Madoff, Tiger Woods, and Barry Bonds as inflicting the most damage onto society. But just how honest are we, with others and with ourselves? The surprising finding from several studies conducted by Dan Ariely and his collaborators is that we all cheat. What's worse, the consequences of these little everyday deceptions can sometimes far outweigh the ill effects of even the biggest lies. Following up on his previous books demonstrating our irrationality, this week on Point of Inquiry Dan walks us through his account of the irrational forces that determine whether or not we behave ethically.

These are pretty good especially if you aren't familiar with Byzantine history.

Listened to that one years ago and it was very well done. Left me wishing Lars Brownworth had done more. I see he has some books.

Agreed. I haven't watched any of those youtube videos at the bottom though. I haven't been back to this page in well over a year.

Lost to the West looks interesting. $6.39 on amazon.

Just began listening to the History of the Papacy Podcast by Stephen Guerra. On the second episdoe right now. Pretty good, not as good as others I listen to in terms of the speaker's ability but I'm pretty interested in the subject.

There was a book with a brief sketch of every Pope. The RCC is the oldest institution in the world.

That would be useful for me. Always wanted to here more about the Popes of Rome but never had a chance to.

It was one of those over-sized jobs. Lots of artwork.

Like for your coffee table. I never know what to do with those.

I bought a huge book of reprints of posters used to sell the Soviet public on Gorbachev's programs of glasnost and perestroika. I never know what to do with it except when I do look at it I have trouble putting it down.

podcasthistoryofourworld.blogspot.com

That's a podcast I've started, interesting, though the author doesn't seem serious enough.

Seems like quite the undertaking. I'll have to try that one out too.

I'll have to check that out, thanks!

BTW, that history podcast I recommended, wasn't as good as expected, I've unsubscribed. He did do a great podcast on the Epic of Gilgamesh, but other than that, fell flat, boring.

I downloaded it, but I haven't heard it yet. I have way too many podcasts in my subscriptions in iTunes. 399 unplayed ones right now. Used to be way more.

That's why I don't subscribe anymore. I just download manually as I need 'em.

I do that with things I don't listen to frequently. Of course many of them are things I went and downloaded in bulk with the intention of listening to all of them.

Here's a good Podcast on history, ffor anyone who is looking for a brief overview of specific historical events/people/movements. It's adequately detailed for a good introduction on the subjects it attempts to illuminate.
