I have a friend who flew the prop driven A-1 Skyraider over there before he upgraded to the F-4. The Skyraider was a bad ass ground attack airplane in its day.

I had A-10s in danger close air support - it was very cool.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctnK7wdJmAo In Vietnam, it was necessary to bait the enemy. They'd refuse to come out or stand their ground unless they thought they could wipe us out. At Ia Drang, the American colonel sacrificed 80 of his 400 men in order to kill 1200 VC. The Pentagon, the politicians, and the American public were unwilling to take so many fatalities all at once. So the strategy was changed to bombing the enemy, who went underground and were not effectively taken out at all that way.

Sick of this, our battalion commander purposely walked two Marine companies into an ambush during Operation Tuscaloosa on January 26, 1967. We were pinned down for 7 hours because he refused to call in air support or artillery until we had the enemy surrounded and cut off. Twenty-eight Marines died and all 300 of the enemy.

However, on Operation Lincoln, the company commander, Frank Graham, wasn't competent enough to pull off the baiting strategy. Fifty-nine of his 150 Marines died within a few hours and the enemy got away. He couldn't live with himself and committed suicide by charging the enemy. He got the Medal of Honor for that.
