The weapons used in this week's massacre in San Bernardino, California, were purchased legally, raising questions about how preventable gun violence is under current U.S. firearm laws.

Eighty-two percent of weapons involved in mass shootings over the last three decades have been bought legally, according to a database (http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2012/12/mass-shootings-mother-jones-full-data)compiled by Mother Jones magazine that defines a mass shooting as taking the lives of at least four people in a public place. Using that criteria, Mother Jones found 73 mass shootings since 1982.

"The way our laws are structured unfortunately often times allow people to legally buy guns who shouldn't," said Mike McLively, a staff attorney at the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence based in San Francisco.

Again the average shooting is one inner city felon shooting another inner city felon with a weapon he cannot legally possess. Did the wife, a non citizen here on a visa have a right to carry her weapon. Because if so that's a loophole I would not mind closing

The two handguns were purchased by Farook. If you know anything about California law, you know it's not just a matter of stopping by a gun store and walking out with the weapon of your choice. California has a mandatory 10 day waiting period and that includes private sales which must go through a FFL. In order to purchase a firearm, you must first obtain a Firearms Safety Certificate from the California DOJ which required taking a class and passing a written test.

Farook was not the legal owner of the two rifles, both of which had been illegally modified. We have not been told if they were "loaned" to him or if he bought them illegally.

Even with the most restrictive laws in the nation, Farook was still able to legally obtain two handguns. Please tell us what additional laws would have prevented an American citizen with no criminal record from purchasing firearms in California?
