Neighbor Purportedly Bought 'Assault-Style' Weapons Used in San Bernardino Rampage

NBC News has learned that early Saturday the FBI searched the Riverside, California home of Enrique Marquez, the man authorities believe originally bought the assault rifles used in the San Bernardino shooting rampage that killed 14.

An FBI official said that Marquez is not considered a suspect in the shooting.

During the search of Marquez's home, neighbors say, agents cut open the garage door with blow torches, used bomb-sniffing dogs, and temporarily detained his father and younger brother.

The man's father told NBC News Saturday afternoon that he does not know where Marquez is and declined further comment.

What makes a semi-automatic rifle an assault rifle in the minds of the Leftists? Is it because they are black and look scary?

You are a leftist. You tell me. Why do Leftists feel compelled to label some rifles "assault" rifles? Is it the same reason that you have a war on carbon dioxide, something we exhale but feel the need to call it carbon to imply it is hard, black and dirty?

Sorry dude, but the definition includes semi-automatics.

Merriam Webster

Assault weapon

any of various automatic or semiautomatic firearms; especially : assault rifle (http://beta.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/assault+rifle)

Assault weapon is a term used in the United States (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States) to define some types of firearms (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firearm).[1] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_weapon#cite_note-Goode130116-1) The definition varies among regulating jurisdictions, but usually includes semi-automatic firearms (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semi-automatic_firearm) with a detachable magazine (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magazine_(firearms)) and a pistol grip (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pistol_grip), and sometimes other features such as a flash suppressor (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash_suppressor) or barrel shroud (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barrel_shroud).[1] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_weapon#cite_note-Goode130116-1)[2] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_weapon#cite_note-Babay121222-2) Some firearms are specified by name.[3] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_weapon#cite_note-Levs130131-3) At the time that the now-defunct Federal Assault Weapons Ban (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Assault_Weapons_Ban) passed in 1994, the U.S. Justice Department (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/US_Justice_Department) said, "In general, assault weapons are semiautomatic firearms with a large magazine of ammunition that were designed and configured for rapid fire and combat use."[3] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_weapon#cite_note-Levs130131-3) The origin of the term is muddled and has been attributed to politicians, gun control groups, the media, and the firearms industry itself.[4] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_weapon#cite_note-Tartaro1995-4)[5] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_weapon#cite_note-Blake130117-5)[6] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_weapon#cite_note-Kauffman121218-6)[1] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_weapon#cite_note-Goode130116-1) It is sometimes conflated with the term "assault rifle (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_rifle)," which refers to selective fire (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selective_fire) military rifles that can fire in automatic (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_firearm) and burst mode (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burst_mode_(weapon)).[5] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_weapon#cite_note-Blake130117-5)

No it is because they deer would take too long to die and would not be recovered by the Hunter.

But once again here is the picture

Of course the .22lr is only good for squirrels and Rabbits with dogs.

the .223 or 5.56 NATO is the rifle that was used in the shootings. and Hunters would use if for Woodchucks, Prairie Dogs, Coyotes

The 30-06 is the most popular deer hinging cartridge.

Eyewitness News obtained a photo of San Bernardino shooter Syed Farook's former neighbor, Enrique Marquez, who allegedly bought two of the four weapons used in Wednesday's massacre.

Marquez allegedly purchased the two "assault-style" rifles over three years ago. Authorities haven't been able to talk to him because he checked himself into a mental hospital after the attack, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press.

Authorities with guns drawn raided Marquez's home in Riverside early Saturday, breaking windows and using a cutting torch to get into the garage, neighbors said.

FBI Director James Comey said the gun purchaser was "not a suspect, at least at this point."

Neighbors say Marquez lives in the Riverside home with his mother, stepdad and other siblings and that he mostly kept to himself.

Looks like a classic straw purchase. He fled because it's a felony.

If, as reported, he bought the guns three years ago, a straw purchase charge probably would not hold up. For a straw purchase charge to be valid, the buyer must purchase the guns from a licensed dealer with the intent of transferring them to someone not legally eligible to purchase a firearm. If he bought those guns and sold them say, a year later, there is no way a straw purchase charge would stick.

You are correct, the one with the wood stock has a longer barrel and would make it much more accurate down range.

Thanks for bringing that up

Same barrel length. The flash suppressor on the pimped out one makes it look longer, but the barrel is the same length on both of them.

No, your wood rifle doesn't have the features as defined in my post:

detachable mag, pistol grip, & sometimes a flash suppressor & barrel shroud.

Both rifles are Ruger Mini-14's. They look different on the outside but internally they are the exact same rifle. One is not more inherently dangerous or deadly than the other so calling one an "assault rifle" is a garbage designation from people who know nothing about firearms.

Sorry dude, but the definition includes semi-automatics.

Merriam Webster

Assault weapon

any of various automatic or semiautomatic firearms; especially : assault rifle (http://beta.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/assault+rifle)

Assault weapon is a term used in the United States (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States) to define some types of firearms (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firearm).[1] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_weapon#cite_note-Goode130116-1) The definition varies among regulating jurisdictions, but usually includes semi-automatic firearms (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semi-automatic_firearm) with a detachable magazine (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magazine_(firearms)) and a pistol grip (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pistol_grip), and sometimes other features such as a flash suppressor (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash_suppressor) or barrel shroud (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barrel_shroud).[1] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_weapon#cite_note-Goode130116-1)[2] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_weapon#cite_note-Babay121222-2) Some firearms are specified by name.[3] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_weapon#cite_note-Levs130131-3) At the time that the now-defunct Federal Assault Weapons Ban (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Assault_Weapons_Ban) passed in 1994, the U.S. Justice Department (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/US_Justice_Department) said, "In general, assault weapons are semiautomatic firearms with a large magazine of ammunition that were designed and configured for rapid fire and combat use."[3] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_weapon#cite_note-Levs130131-3) The origin of the term is muddled and has been attributed to politicians, gun control groups, the media, and the firearms industry itself.[4] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_weapon#cite_note-Tartaro1995-4)[5] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_weapon#cite_note-Blake130117-5)[6] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_weapon#cite_note-Kauffman121218-6)[1] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_weapon#cite_note-Goode130116-1) It is sometimes conflated with the term "assault rifle (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_rifle)," which refers to selective fire (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selective_fire) military rifles that can fire in automatic (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_firearm) and burst mode (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burst_mode_(weapon)).[5] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_weapon#cite_note-Blake130117-5)
It is a political term used by weapons illiterates. Congratulations. Ignorance has made it into the dictionary.

The origin of the term is muddled? No, it is a left wing political term intended to confuse.

I'm not a big fan of getting into a battle of wits with the defenseless, but it's important to point out that the Founding Fathers must have felt exactly the same way, having made the Right to Keep and Bear Arms a cornerstone of the Constitution - after having supported fighting and dying to establish and defend just exactly such a Right.

It's a shame that the Left has such few and stupid things they consider important enough to die for.

Actually I resorted to a meme because I'm tired of having the argument, but here goes:

If this is true than we might as well not have laws against theft, murder, drunk driving, and any number of other things because if criminals don't listen then why bother?

Usually on the items listed above, the government does not choose to not prosecute people so the number of crimes increase, and they are able to pass more laws, With gun laws, that is exactly what Democrats do.

Both of those rifles have detachable magazines. The one on top just doesn't have one inserted. The 16" barrel and fire control parts are identical. The scary one has a muzzle brake/flash hider installed. Both rifles are made by Ruger.

Either Gun Prosecution is down 45% because it is so safe out there that the CPL and CCW programs are working and there is no need for new Gun legislation?

OR

The President and his administration have chosen to be soft on Gun Crimes to pad the statistics and hopefully get the people to demand more Gun control?
