View Full Version : Moderating Issues

Members,

As part of our efforts to grow discussion on our forums, I wish to make it clear that I am always receptive to feedback concerning moderating issues.

Our primary goal on this forum is to limit moderation whenever possible, and when we must intervene, we try to enforce our limited set of rules evenly, independent of user or political ideology. While this is our goal, we also recognize that it is impossible to achieve perfection, and that we can always improve. Your feedback is one way in which improvements can be made.

I believe transparency is best, but I recognize that in some instances members are more comfortable discussing matters privately. Regardless, I am always available either through personal messages or in public threads to address any concerns you may have.

Thank you for being part of our forum.

I add my voice for limited moderation. It really isn't needed. One tool is to have a troll room where really questionable people are moved to. Those rooms can actually be quite fun!

Are really questionable people those that violently oppose your views?
I only ask because I know you would not really like to be regarded as intolerant .

Absolutely not.

I have no interest in how I am liked or not liked. I love myself too much to care.

Well, I noticed that MMC is not a mod anymore, hope this thread on moderating issue's doesn't have anything to do with that...although I have never had any trouble with him and thought he modded fairly and lightly.

Must admit that news surprised me . Where do you get that news from ?
I always assumed that MMC was the chief Mod and from my limited dealings with him---- or perhaps him with me -- I rather thought he was the site owner and ran a very good ship .
Perhaps he is a family man and wanted more free time . Pity . He was efficient and listened .

I just happened to go to the front page and noticed his name was not green anymore.

Kinda strange... nobody worked harder than MMC to get this forum going. I always thought he was a key player too. Wonder if he'll stick around and post or move on? :(

I concur with your assessment of MMC's moderating. I too feel that he modded fairly and lightly, and I know many others agree. While MMC has made many contributions to our forum, his actions as moderator were one of if not the most valuable. I know I speak for the other moderators when I say it is much appreciated.

Our moderators work as a team to attempt to keep the forum running as smoothly as possible. In regards to your statement Carygrant, we do not have a head moderator, and all moderators are considered to be equal.

Out of respect for MMC, I will refrain from posting any details regarding his removal unless he chooses to take matters public in this thread. I will state that in the opinion of myself and the other moderators, the team was being negatively impacted by his actions in the moderator room. This decision was not reached lightly, and the other moderators were consulted repeatedly regarding this action. I will say, without exaggeration, the removal of MMC as moderator was the most difficult decision I have had to make as the owner of this forum.

All I can say is.....I was doing what I thought was in the Best Interests of the Members and this Site. Inadvertantly I lost my temper in doing so. Which I am not perfect by any means. I was asked repeatedly to back off by the other members of the team and the Admin. Yet, I felt that the matter was so Significant that if I had to sacrifice myself to solve the problem I would be willing to do so in the Best Interests of Forum.

Ok, as an ex-mod and a member and still am at that place, (haven’t spoke there in a while) at that place if you don’t have extremely think skin than you won’t last. Especially, Christians and have had many of my friends either got banned or left. Because we have seen the worse of the worst it’s hard to see just the ones that are here to annoy as being a problem. Could I go back and be a mod again? Yes, they would take me back but if I can’t laugh and have fun regardless I would rather not. I once witnessed a mod that was so stressed out and whore her heart on her sleeve that she banned me for saying to another member “why the need to call names, no respect at home?”. She later apologized.

All I ask is to try to remember where we came from. Always outnumbered but always was their for each other if we were on-line. I know MMC and a few other ones on here. Because we are so think-skinned I know it’s hard for some to understand us. Can I see the other side where one or two may have been upset at some members here yes. I am not here to cut down any mod and I did see things that was said to them coming from some members that I didn’t like either.

I will always have respect for MMC and hope things can work themselves out.

I shall smite thee with a rod of Iron,

Well just be able to laugh and do it at the same time. I got ragged and laughed at when I was banned. My internet friends at that time said I wasn't mean enough to ever get banned. It was a shock to them and I couldn't stop laughing. First time I had ever been banned and I was proud of myself even tho I really didn't do anything but wasn't going to let them know.

Admin this problem was not with you! Nor my bruthas that created this Site. Moreover you guys have trusted me from the beginning. Not one of you cannot say this is not so. This issue was not done out of any sort of disrespect for any of ya's. Or done personally to you. Not any of you. Nonetheless, despite what anothers concerns are. Not one of you ever had the concerns about my ability to work with others. Why would you let this individual plant such thoughts in your head. Just because they complain about such with myself. Which comes with that one not getting their way or being able to follow that Agenda that one brought with them.

In addition with all that have Pmed you and myself over this whole matter should be enough for you and my bruthas to come to some consensus together. All of you know that I put these members before myself. That I put this Site before myself. I would not tell you that I would Step Down while taking the problem with me if it wasnt for the Betterment of ALL our members. Or For this Site. Nor would I even offer up an alternative to try and work anything out which I have done. But one thing is for certain. That is for you and those that helped to create this place to decide and without any Interference whatsoever!

We did not get to where we are without working as a team. Again the matter comes down to Trust. Do you Trust the one that has been with you thru thick and thin? Or do you trust the one that just came along? You know for a fact that I don't use my position to prevent others from coming at me. Clearly, the one that talks a good game did just that. As the proof is with their own words which puts themself over this Site and ALL of our Members. That fact being, for some reason. It must consider itself More Important than others. Such shows who is thinking of themselves. Which btw, IMO should be speaking in LOUD VOLUMNES and Echoing thru your minds.

There is also the fact that it takes two. To give us any concern in the first place!

Sorry MMC to see that the "balance" in the fair and balance has changed since I've been on vacation, but I think you and I knew this was eventually going to happen. It's just the new method of suppression, and I suspect the same will happen to me some day.

No offense intended, guys... but y'all really need to settle this tiff behind the scenes. For a forum that claims to be member-centered, the topic of the week seems to be mgmt-centered.

If you ask me (which nobody has), this forum has TOO MANY MODS for the size anyway. When you log on to see 10 members and 3 of 'em are mods, that's too many.

Just my $.02. Some may appreciate the 'openness' of this fight, but it's not my cup of tea.

Too much drama.

I donít know about that one. I use to have an internet coin club, still talk on others but a guy comes in arguing about everything. You rarely see this among coin dealers and it was funny to me. I played with him so much that we became best friends for years. We traded coins and I was glad I didnít treat him harshly. Some times you have to take a step back and wait to see if they ease up. In fact he turned out to be a great guy and friend. Itís not that easy to trust most coin dealers and this one was honest, the best decision I made was giving him time.

Interesting story. I have one, too... back in the day, I posted on yahoo's romantic advice boards and met a woman whose husband was having a cyber affair. I was trying to convince her it wasn't the end of the world and she went ballistic on me, like I was the other woman! I accused her of being having a 'mother superior' attitude in the bedroom and we had quite a catfight. That was over ten yrs ago and we're good friends to this day and she wears 'ms' in front of her screenname which stands for mother superior. It does indeed pay to wait before passing judgment. Some of my best buds started off as 'message board enemies'. ;)

I admire the way things are run. Having come from a forum where EVERYTHING turned into a mod issue, I like the hands off approach.

Have had non dealings at all with mods, respected MMC [didn't always agree] but I have to mildly question having revealed he was "removed" and a negative impact on the room. Just a suggestion, but I feel that should have been kept private among the mods.

To some degree I agree with you, but I think the atmosphere here, again to some degree is that this is more of an "us" thing rather than a privately ran forum to the extent that most stuff is handled behind closed doors.

It's not healthy to air out everything that is being done behind the scenes but in cases where a key and valued member is involved, in my opinion it's better to have some open discussion on the issue rather than just ignore it and let speculation run rampant.

I'm sure that a lot is being said in PM and contrary to some belief those PM's are not in the domain of moderator access, and ignoring the issue while the grapevine is aflame can be a dangerous thing.

That's how I look at it, for what it's worth.

When I resigned at another place, I didn't feel the need to let people know why except the head mod which I was friends with. I would have let them think I had been removed but they didn't want to do it that way. Now some friends here knew. Regardless, people would have noticed. Sometimes mysterious are fun. Would I have been hurt if it would have been the other way around, not at all.

We have a major problem here Admin. As the Mods and you know which one. Is doing all to prevent Feedback to you from the membership Concerning Moderation. Including stopping a new member from asking you any questions.

We know you are about Transparency Admin but it is clear specific mods are doing all to prevent you from even getting feedback from the membership.

What do we do when a Mod stops members from going to you or bringing you that feedback. Deletes, moves or closes your Announcement Threads? Tells people they can discuss moderation only in PMS (DESPITE YOUR WORDS HERE Where SHE Partook of this THREAD,) with you or even voice their opinions on Mods. Since due to that consensus that Mod could or is leading the way for you to not know anything about their actions around here with the members

Is this MOD allowed to dismiss what you say Admin and tell the membership something completely different? Since when can a Mod Move or Delete your Announcement Threads For the membership to give you any feedback or express any concerns to you.

Two points of clarification.

One, threads that are moved off to the moderation forum room for review are available to ADMIN's view, so the general concern here is misleading.

Two, there's a difference between discussing issues with moderation process in general, which ADMIN says he welcomes online or off, and discussing specific personal issues, which should be done offline.
