I see the blanket closing of that many schools as an at-best problematic, and at worst downright awful move. I think a major problem is in HOW we educate students. Standardized tests, especially to the excesses that No Child Left Behind pushed them, is harmful to teachers and students. More flexibility in curriculum and methods could work wonders in many of these struggling schools, and would almost certainly be a better option than compounding already over-crowded classrooms by forcing more students into fewer schools. The added burden of having to acconmodate so many new students could cause several of these "above average" schools to flag, and start faring poorer. If they too are closed, then we could see a downward death-spiral in America's education system.

Additionally, or perhaps by extension, schools need to be allowed to have strong programs in Arts and Sciences. Band, Choir, and Theater are all good ways to express oneself, for students to stay out of trouble after school, find a place to fit in, and can even improve their performance in other classes. Music (especially classical music like Mozart) has been shown to stimulate areas of the brain used in Mathematics. Math teachers have found that playing Mozart in the background during testing results in higher test scores. Acting is useful life skill, and can aid in public speaking, self-confidence, and memory (you've got to learn your lines, after all). Art, music, and Theater help students to synthesize and incorporate the information they encounter during class.

Bottom line - there is subtlety and nuance in the things people say - the article flat out lies. I'm quite certain that Hillary wouldn't close half the schools.

I didn't say he wanted to schlong his daughter .. but many have drawn that conclusion.
