Democrats deny speaking time to D.C. statehood

By Stephen Dinan - The Washington Times

September 4, 2012

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — While they buried a call for statehood-type rights for the District of Columbia in their platform, Democrats will not have advocates speak about the issue from the podium during their three-day convention in Charlotte, the city's representative to Congress said on Tuesday.

"Failing to give the District of Columbia a voice at the convention this year, in particular, is a bitter pill to swallow," said Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, who will be speaking Tuesday night, though her remarks are restricted to her role as a female member of Congress.

She said it was the first time in two decades that D.C. rights advocates didn't get a specific speaking slot at the convention.

WOW! Now they dictate what the speakers can say? Did the DNC hand out pre-prepared speeches? Sure looks that way to me. How very Politburo of them. I guess the Democrats don't allow Diversity of Ideas.

Why would they limit what she has to say about DC statehood? It's not like any of the speakers can laud Obama's accomplishments, that could be summed up in a minute and a half.

That is a surprise. DC statehood would guarantee more dems in Congress and D votes for president.
