Matt Taibbi underscores the problem with today's crop of Republicans:

Lofgren, in describing the reasons for his defection from the Republican party, describes a Republican camp that increasingly acts not like a traditional peacetime political organization, but more like an apocalyptic cult or one of the authoritarian movements from early 20th century European history.

In particular, the insane decision to turn the once-routine procedure of raising the debt ceiling (Lofgren notes it was done 87 times since WWII) into a political crisis revealed that the GOP party mainstream had sunk to the level of terrorism – holding our economic system hostage in exchange for political concessions.

This was a form of violence, and a serious escalation even from the days of George W. Bush, when the party was mostly limited in its willingness to use human beings as pawns in homicidal ploys for political power. Bush and Rove were willing to sacrifice Iraqi lives, and the lives of American servicemen, for oil and votes. But this current crew of Republicans shook canisters of kerosene over the entire American population and threatened to light a match if it didn't get what it wanted.

Terrorism and violence? :D Yeah, that sort of rhetoric isn't part of the problem. No! Not at all.

You can't blame one party alone for what has happened but I some kind of rebellion or revolution will lead to the end of the U.S. Hopefully not for many years but I could see it happening in the next 50-100 years or so. Just a guess...

While the Dems and liberal push the class warfare. All for their beloved Titles and their Aristocracy. One could point to all that Democratic History. Seems it was based on what.....violence and terror. Thru race, class, and gender.

I'm always amused by how the left speaks of "forms of violence".

words cant compare to the damage done by the republicans with the debt ceiling. like the article said its been raised 88 times and then when obama is president suddenly it cant be allowed. they held the country hostage absolutely

Well stated Elibe. The Republican "leadership" burned this country and is determined to keep the economy down until Obama is voted out of office. It is a sorry time in American History.

In this case, the GOP did what the people who voted them into office wanted them to do - oppose the massive spending frenzy.

You can bellyache all you want about the matter, they did what the were voted into office to do.

I'm not siding with the GOP on this issue to a large extent, but what I am most impressed so far about the whole affair is the check and balance system, it works and to have either party in complete power is dangerous. This is the lesson that should be considered, not partisan pissing contests.

when the debt ceiling is approx 90 percent and climbing daily of the GDP. it was very appropriate of the TEA Party to hold to the ideals that they were voted in for to object to a raise in the debt ceiling..just what part of being fiscally responsible doesn't the left get. as it is the debt ceiling got raised by 2.4 trillion which will put us at over 100 percent of the GDP. this is unsustainable.. some of you blame the TEA PARTY for the downgrade.. in reality it is our debt ratio that caused the downgrade.

Or we can just remind our English friend about the recent riots in his country which were the result of class warfare and unrestrained immigration.

I am as much an American as any of you.

Furthermore it seems you have all joined forces in some effort to silence and judge me when not a one of you can provide any evidence of a misdeed on my part. Nor that it would be acceptable behaviour regardless, this three versus one that you are now employing. You attack me for no cause. For shame!

Lastly England and the United Kingdom as well as all of Europe are still here and will be long after! You are comparing a country that has existed for a scant few hundred years to those that have survived far longer and far worse circumstances than those which we find ourselves in today.

Mister D

Good. :)

No, it is most likely that multiple people happen to disagree with you. Silence you? Bologna. Who has ever suggested anything of the kind? Do you not post what you please? You really need to man up, Pen.

Who is comparing the US and Europe? No one?

Conley

Relax Pen, just keep it to politics and don't take it so personally.

This is not a place for the thin skinned but you know that or you would have left already ;)

the tea party didnt have anything to do with it, it was the rank and file republicans like bonner from kentucky and cantor

the tea baggers dont really have any power they are more just civilians than politicians. there is no 3rd party it is just another name for republicans

Really then explain why the Tea Party happened to be knocking off Republican Candidates. Sure wasn't knocking out to many Democrats. Also you need to check the age demographics. Most Tea party people tend to be younger than the Estabished GOP.

Only the Tea Party had a debt reduction plan that would have avoided a credit rating downgrade, based on what the credit rating agencies spelled out in advance.

A debt reduction plan is what is needed, no doubt. S & P made it clear beforehand what would happen if actions were not taken.

Really if these organizations are trying for any credibility than the downgrade was long overdue.

What did compromise get us? Subprime loans, TARP, GM/Chrysler bailouts, an extra $2T on the debt ceiling, and the ensuing crash(es).

Well said.

You know one thing that gives me hope is the rise of the Tea Party...it is too much for one politician to take on, but if we can get a national movement toward fiscal responsibility and accountability then there is still hope to save our nation.

The Washingtonians of both parties are trying awfully hard to kill the Tea Party. They wouldn't sweat it if they felt it was insignificant or transient.
