This is why when claiming you are a cop or a private eye or a journalist YOU Must show credentials upon being asked by the police. People impersonate officials constantly for access and nefarious reasons and of course he must not have passed a background check because he posessed an illegal handgun.
Police have arrested a 25-year-old man for impersonating a police officer, a Newark Police Department spokesman confirmed. Jose F. Ruiz was arrested on Jan. 4 after an off-duty Newark police lieutenant overheard him identify himself as a city police officer. At the time, Ruiz was at a retail gun store in Belleville inquiring about purchasing an "off-duty" weapon, said Sgt. Ronald Glover.
The police lieutenant later followed the suspect into Newark, where he and backup officers called in to assist pulled over and arrested Ruiz, Glover said.
A search of Ruiz' car turned up a loaded 40-caliber handgun, a police radio, a knife labeled "police model" and several other police related items, according to reports obtained by NJ Advance Media.
Ruiz now stands charged with impersonating a police officer, and was issued several motor vehicle summonses, Glover said.
The incident remains under investigation, and additional charges could be announced, Glover said.
Acting Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose commended the actions of the off-duty lieutenant. "Because of him, we were able to remove another gun from our streets which may have otherwise been used in criminal activity," he said.
