It's been a few years since I was a journalist but I'm having a hard time with Canada in number 10 and the US at 47 by the simple fact that in Canada a reporter may have to reveal their sources in court or face jail terms. In the US not so.
And I know that access to information in the US is easier than in Canada, although it is getting better here.

A. The organization is Reporters Without Borders.
B. Our journalist can whine better than journalists anywhere.

I know the organization well.
I wonder if its a matter of limiting access, or the US press has quit trying?
Are they doing their homework or are they practicing "hand out" journalism? They don't seem to be asking the tough questions, like "why does your book jacket say you were born in Kenya? And why didn't you insist it be corrected?
Or how about, What assertive measures have you made as leader of the country to bring compromise to the congressional stalemate?
They just keep regurgitating his assertion that its the Reps who aren't co-operating.

They admit their survey is very subject and because of that varies much from year to year.
To me, in the US, the problem is not so much a lack of freedom of the press as the press subjecting themselves to serve as political propaganda arm of the government, MSNBC etc Dems and Fox Reps.

I read their survey years ago when I first became aware of it and it was so clearly biased I never paid any attention to it.

You seem to have a hard time with anything that steps the wrong side of the American mind set .
The result is made appalling by your constant nonsense about God Bless America , The Land of the Free etc .and your desire to bring Democracy and the Rule of Law to the peasant nations .
I expect the study must be rigged and be statistically invalid . Possibly the Finland and US results were unfortunately switched .

How so?
I'm always skeptical and I have little knowledge of this kind of stuff, I'd be curious about your first-hand experience.

Is this supposed to be informative? It sounds like a D/RNC speech, lots of fluff and little substance.

From the Wikipedia article cited in the OP.
"The report is based on a questionnaire[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Press_Freedom_Index#cite_note-0) sent to partner organizations of Reporters Without Borders (14 freedom of expression groups in five continents) and its 130 correspondents around the world, as well as to journalists, researchers, jurists and human rights activists.[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Press_Freedom_Index#cite_note-1)The survey asks questions about direct attacks on journalists and the media as well as other indirect sources of pressure against the free press. Due to the nature of the survey's methodology based on individual perceptions, there can be wide contrasts in a country's ranking from year to year."
And, here's the link to the survey for 2009.

In 2006, the city where I live was hit with riots, murders, assaults, and a breakdown in public services, safety, and order that lasted for six months. I personally saw participants in the riots wearing press cards and carrying little digital cameras. One "journalist" was killed at a barricade in a small village. Communist group described him initially as a "friend" and "partner" but they quickly shut up. The media described him as an "activist photojournalist" initially and then as a "photojournalist activists" and then simply as a "photojournalist".
I wish there was a free press.
