Why pay thousands and 1000s of $$ to go to college when you can educate YOURSELF, meaning you can read books?
That is the best education you can get. That way you can CHOOSE what sources you will read. If you dont like the author, you can find another one (at the library). You can pick any topic you want
and you don't have to take such ridiculous "college" classes as "Victimology" or "Great Women in the History of Birth-Control" or whatever (that last one is made up but there are classes similar to that. The first one "Victimology" is really a class in some colleges)
In other words, when you educate yourself, you don't have to worry about being brainwashed by a liberal loony tunes professor
(is that last term massively redundant?)

The point of course is being exposed to ideas you wouldn't otherwise be exposed to. That said, western universities focus more on job training than education.

Why not do both? I like reading, but some of the problems with educating yourself only that way might be choosing what to read, and understanding what you read. I'm still only just starting the fourth form, and I might have some problems understanding Russel's Philosophić Naturalis Principia Mathematica without the help of a teacher. I even sometimes have problems understanding the words Shakespeare uses. Like I only recently worked out the meaning of "Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thous Romeo?" I thought it meant something like "Where are you, Romeo?" but it means "For what reason are you Romeo?"
My dad says when I go to university, I will encounter all sorts of new ideas - not all of them healthy - and the purpose of further education has nothing to do with getting a good job - there are loads of Managing Directors with barely a high school education. But a good education means you will get much more out of life, even out of little things. I am studying music, and it is interesting to know why Gustav Mahler put to music five of Ruckert's Kindertotenlieder - eight of his brothers and sisters died during childhood, and his own four year old daughter Maria died of scarlet fever. It makes the music more meaningful, and I wouldn't have known that without my music teacher (or my parents).

Put "I read books" on your resume and see how that helps your job prospects.

Well, he makes sense. Yes, it's great to have a certificate, a great education can be had by reading to absorb information rather that to pass a test and move on.

Maybe, but not always, and how is someone else going to know you have 'a great education' which has given you the skills they need? A 'certificate' - preferably a university degree, tells them that some independent authority (like not your mum) says you have 'a great education'.
