Interesting. My first guess is that the Koch brothers see a good possibility of a Sanders presidency and are hedging their bets. Otherwise, rhetoric aside, I see a huge disconnect with the pattern of their political contributions.

Let's keep the comments nice, people. Ad hom will be grounds for summary TB. Blanket assertions without at least some attempt to back them up with citations may be grounds for summary TB. There will, however, be no proactive TB of the usual suspects at this time.

Charles Koch: 'I agree' with Bernie SandersLibertarian philanthropist Charles Koch has found common ground with one of his biggest critics: Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. In an op-ed (https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/charles-koch-this-is-the-one-issue-where-bernie-sanders-is-right/2016/02/18/cdd2c228-d5c1-11e5-be55-2cc3c1e4b76b_story.html) for the Washington Post, the billionaire mega-donor wrote that he and Sanders agree on the importance of amending "a political and economic system that is often rigged to help the privileged few at the expense of everyone else, particularly the least advantaged."

The Kochs have been speaking out against crony capitalism for decades.

A fuller quote from Koch's oped in the WaPo:

...in spite of the fact that he often misrepresents where I stand on issues, the senator should know that we do agree on at least one — an issue that resonates with people who feel that hard work and making a contribution will no longer enable them to succeed.

The senator is upset with a political and economic system that is often rigged to help the privileged few at the expense of everyone else, particularly the least advantaged. He believes that we have a two-tiered society that increasingly dooms millions of our fellow citizens to lives of poverty and hopelessness. He thinks many corporations seek and benefit from corporate welfare while ordinary citizens are denied opportunities and a level playing field.

I agree with him.

Democrats and Republicans have too often favored policies and regulations that pick winners and losers. This helps perpetuate a cycle of control, dependency, cronyism and poverty in the United States....

Impossible. The Kochs are RWNJs who are conspiring to enslave America. Everyone knows that.

All of the evidence does, indeed, suggest that quite strongly.

The whole "ZOMG SOCHULIZMS commies under the bed let's hear it for FREE ENTERPRISE" thing is useful cover and camouflage for the foxes, who constantly warning the hens about the Big Bad socialist Wolf.

The only real difference between a crony capitalist billionaire and a thug leader of a dictatorship is that the crony capitalist billionaire does not have the legal power to kill you.

Yet.

Why do you keep acting like "free enterprise" and "capitalism" are the same things?

I think that traditionally, in American culture, the overlap between the two terms is almost complete. I make a distinction between capitalism and crony capitalism.

Strange, because I see capitalism and free markets as being totally incompatible with one another.

It is a simple libertarian position. I wouldn't read more into it.
