Jury Awards Hulk Hogan $115 Million in Gawker Sex-Tape Suit

http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/jury-awards-hulk-hogan-115-million-gawker-sex-tape-suit-n541756

A jury on Friday awarded Hulk Hogan $115 million in his lawsuit against Gawker Media, agreeing the company violated his privacy by posting a sex tape of the ex-pro wrestler online.

The two-week trial culminated with jurors deliberating for six hours.

Hogan hugged his attorney as court adjourned.

Hogan, 62, who used his legal name of Terry Bollea during the civil trial in St. Petersburg, was seeking $100 million in damages after Gawker published the edited sex clip in 2012.

Hogan argued the publication violated his privacy, while Gawker argued he is a public figure and the post was protected by the First Amendment.

Former professional wrestler Hulk Hogan and his attorney Seema Ghatnekar prepare to take a break just after the jury was handed Hogan's case against Gawker Media for deliberations on Friday, March 18, 2016, in St. Petersburg, Fla.

She just won a large amount.

His judgment will be cut by an appeals court in a couple of years.

About time somebody I don't hate hit the lawsuit lottery jackpot.

Way too much money. I'd expect a hundred million if someone cut my hand off or took a nut...but for showing a sex tape? Ridiculous.

It will get drastically cut on appeal.

The attorney is instantly rich, though.

Oh, I know...and I get the idea that it is also meant to punish Gawker, but it's still a ridiculous sum. Even if cut in half.

Sort of related question...I was reading about the OJ civil suit and the Goldman's inability to collect from Simpson. What mechanisms are in place to actually collect from someone who has been successfully sued?

Florida requires that the money be put in escrow until the appeals are over.

Limited. You get a lien and can take from their income if they work and their tax refund if due.

A smart person could avoid both of those.

That is why serious lawsuits include companies / cities as defendants. You are not going to get much out of most people.

John Oliver asked why Hogan "dresses for court like he’s a pall bearer at a boa constrictor’s funeral.”

I don't think the media should have the right to trash peoples private lives just because they can. I'm also surprised that Terry Bollea has lived to be 62. He took steroids for 18 years.

Unless they stole the sex tape this is bullshit. What was the problem, testicle shrinkage from roids ? If you don't want sex tapes published don't post them

Hulk Hogan could get even more money in sex-tape case

http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/hulk-hogan-could-get-even-more-money-in-sex-tape-case/ar-BBqJzZ0?li=BBnbfcL&ocid=iehp

Florida laws allow up to three times the compensatory amount in a case like this -- meaning another $345 million more could be awarded -- but that is regarded as highly unlikely.

Gawker, which could face bankruptcy, intends to appeal.
