Is the soul of the Democratic party corrupt (http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/01/books/review/listen-liberal-and-the-limousine-liberal.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2 Fbook-review)?

Don't get hung up on the word soul- we know Dems are godless heathens. It is the theme of a new book by social critic Thomas Frank (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Frank).

The book asks Democrats to search their party and their actions and ask whether they have abandoned the working class for TED talks and leisure at Martha's Vineyard.

In his new book, the social critic Thomas Frank *poses another possibility: that liberals in general — and the Democratic Party in particular — should look inward to understand the sorry state of American politics. Too busy attending TED talks and *vacationing in Martha’s Vineyard, Frank argues, the Democratic elite has abandoned the party’s traditional commitments to the working class. In the process, they have helped to create the political despair and anger at the heart of today’s right-wing insurgencies. They may also have sown the seeds of their own demise. Frank’s recent columns argue that the Bernie Sanders campaign offers not merely a challenge to Hillary Clinton, but a last-ditch chance to save the corrupted soul of the Democratic Party.

Frank has been delivering some version of this message for the past two decades as a political essayist and a founding editor of The Baffler magazine. “Listen, Liberal” is the thoroughly entertaining if rather gloomy work of a man who feels that nobody has been paying attention. Frank’s most famous book, “What’s the Matter With Kansas?” (2004), argued that Republicans had duped the white working class by pounding the table on social issues while delivering tax cuts for the rich. He focused on Kansas as the reddest of red states (and, not incidentally, the place of his birth). This time Frank is coming for the Ivy League blue-state liberals, that “tight little network of enlightened strivers” who have allegedly been running the country into the ground. Think of it as “What’s the Matter With Massachusetts?”

Frank’s book is an unabashed polemic, not a studious examination of policy or polling trends. In Frank’s view, liberal policy wonks are part of the problem, members of a well-educated elite that massages its own technocratic vanities while utterly missing the big question of the day. To Frank, that question hasn’t changed much over the last few centuries. “It is the eternal conflict of management and labor, owner and worker, rich and poor — only with one side pinned to the ground and the other leisurely pounding away at its adversary’s face,” he writes. Today, polite circles tend to describe this as the issue of “inequality.” Frank prefers an older formulation. “The 19th century understood it better: They called it ‘the social question,’ ” he writes, defined as “nothing less than the whole vast mystery of how we are going to live together.”

Democrats have a soul? Who knew.

Of course it is they have NO morality left in the party. I really can't think of one redeeming thing that they stand for.

Frank argues that the Democratic Party — once “the Party of the People” — now caters to the interests of a “professional-managerial class” consisting of lawyers, doctors, professors, scientists, programmers, even investment bankers

The Democrat Party lost its soul around the time it nominated Carter. What remains is the ability to skillfully demagogue working class memes, and it's the fault of its constituents, who haven't demanded more as a result of a lack of intelligence and a handy entity to blame: anyone wealthy, and anyone to their right.

Such is the moral and mental decay of this country.

What used to be considered hard left is now considered regular left; and Democrats have certainly gone there.

Bernie Sanders (who is a democratic socialist) is typical of the thinking nowadays in this party...

Democrats are good people for the most part, they are being led by the nose right now by the far progressive left. Just like the republican party was for the first 4 yrs of the obama administration.

At the moment the left is as far left nuts as they get, somehow in their heads they now believe the USA should be suddenly gender neutral and not only do they want but they are turning public bathrooms into gender neutral zones and they are doing it in Schools. San Francisco and New Jersey have Gender neutral schools where boy and girls use the same bathroom at the same time. I cant even begin to describe how against this I am.

Ok Im older gotcha, generation gap I gotcha, but I still have my faculties and I have a full lifetime to look back on and I cant remember one point in my life where men and women using separate public bathrooms was a problem. Where the hell did all the trannys pee all my life or are they something just created since gay marriage ?

Again there are prophylactic dispensers in mens rooms and feminine napkin dispensers in womens facilities for a reason.

This gender neutral bathroom crap is so disgustingly absurd that it frightens me. I DO NOT WANT MY GRANDAUGHTERS having to do something very very personal in front of strange males. I do not want to have my wife or daughters or grandaughters and great grand daughters to have to have a personal emergency and have to share bathroom facilities and share them with strange men. These people have gone fricken nuts??? This issue is enough all by itself for me to vote for republicans.

What do you think of what democrat JBJ said. Though these days, where he said ne gro, you can substitute for Mexican. And where he said nig ger, you can substitute the word sp ick.

I can see how you would think that. Not that Democrats seem to have anything against Rape. I give you Bill Clinton as an example.

This issue is enough all by itself for you to vote for republicans?

What in the world?

Lemme f'n get this straight. Democrats pass a trillion dollar stimulus that is an absolute failure. Double the national debt to 19 trillion. In such a rush to keep promises, the President trades 5 high ranking terrorists for one traitor. The withdrawal from Iraq, the rise of ISIS, the entire world on fire including our own inner cities, our education and welfare systems in shambles.......and the issue of f'n bathroom etiquette in going to have you voting Republican?

Well la tee f'n da.

We don't want your vote, Common. Thanks but no thanks.....because we know damn well some equally stupid issue will have you voting Democrat come 2020.

That issue......is going to define your vote? Our cities seeing massive increases in violence, our economy sputtering, the same economy that was required to grow to facilitate all the debt roped around its' neck. Your children and grandchildren already saddled with debt, Common, the violence in our own communities right there in front of your face.....but yer gonna make bathrooms your focus issue.....as if there isn't somebody wanting you focused on such nonsense.

I must confess, I find it odd what throws a bee in your bonnet.

I am 68 years of age; and I would probably not feel terribly uncomfortable if a strange woman were to see me using a public restroom. (Nor would I feel especially uncomfortable if I were to see her using the restroom.)

But I would feel downright creepy whenever a young girl were to enter!

Moreover, adolescent males tend to associate all nudity with sex--even if it is clearly not in a sexual context--so it is probably a bad idea to mix genders in the public restrooms, for this reason alone.

I would feel uncomfortable if a young girl would enter the stall where I was taking a pee..and I'm a 67 year old female... Just remember.. in Ladies rooms.. that doesn't happen. There are no urinals... no one pees in front of anyone.. but in a stall with the door closed.. Therefore, what is there to be uncomfortable about?.. unless one leaves the stall with one's pants down around one's ankles.. no one sees anybody's privates.. Generally, we pull up our drawers before exiting.
