MYFOXNY.COM - Hundreds of protesters were staging a massive rally throughout the Wall Street area over the weekend.

The protest is part of the “US Day of Rage” and was designed to draw attention to the role powerful financial matters play in damaging the U.S. economy.

The protest is modeled after the "Arab Spring" uprisings that have taken place throughout African nations, such as Egypt, Tunisia and Syria. Occupy Wall Street is a "leaderless resistance movement" orchestrated through Twitter, Facebook and other social media tools.

NYPD Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne said the NYPD was prepared for the protesters and a protest area was established on Broad Street at Exchange Place next to the Stock Exchange. However, the protesters elected not to use it.

"None associated with the demonstrations sought permits," Browne said. "A group that formed at the bull at Bowling Green spilled into the streets on each side of the bull, posed safety issues and impeded vehicular traffic. The streets were re-opened to vehicular traffic and barriers were subsequently erected at the bull to prevent a re-occurance.”

Any of you guys hear about this? I didn't hear a thing...not exactly the "Arab Spring" they were hoping for.

Named in solidarity with the Egyptian Days of Rage that brought down dictator Hosni Mubarak, U.S. Days of Rage has been in the planning stages for many months. “Rage” may seem to be a harsh word for protests that emphasize non-violent protest, but “long-term simmering frustration” is hard to fit on a poster.

The U.S. Days of Rage (USDOR) website states the principle behind the protests, which listed events scheduled for New York, Portland, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Austin, and Seattle. USDOR says corruption “has usurped our nation’s civil and military power, spawning a host of threats to liberty & national security.” Corrupt election practices, claims USDOR, are one of the major threats to democracy in America. As long as the extremely wealthy individuals and corporations are able to elect candidates of their choice, politicians who are beholden to them for office will pass legislation favorable to that group, to the detriment of average citizens.

Not a word. ??? It will take a real disaster to wake Americans. I'm fairly convinced of this.

I agree 100%. Not sure what it is...there are protests demonstrations and riots everywhere except North America. Haven't heard anything about Canada and in Mexico I'd guess they are too afraid of the cartels (rightly imo) to have large gatherings.

Yeah, you're right. There seem to be riots almost everywhere although China has hundreds of disturbances every year. I don't think they are upset about the same issues.

On the other hand, there is a tradition of civil disturbances in many other parts of the world. It does seem to be something Americans have not been inclined to historically.

Yeah there has been some crazy stuff in China recently. It takes real guts to lead a protest in that country...the one I saw was about not wanting some new factory built because the land was all polluted and everyone was sick as a result. Sad and I think a lot of it never even makes it to our media outlets.

You think because we're lazy? I'm not sure that's it.

I think most Americans -- especially laborers -- would be surprised if they new what kind of benefits European workers had. Not that it's the best thing for an economy (I really don't know) but for an individual it sure seems easier over there.

Lazy? Not at all. Heck, we work harder than most other western countries. It just doesn't seem to be a historical tradition here. Similarly, socialism never caught on in our culture either.

Yeah, but now Europe has to be pay the piper. Not sure how anyone could think that was sustainable.

I am willing to bet money some did.....morover here in the US they can deflect with Entertainment. Report sports, weather, and local crime. Keep the masses entertained and 80% of the population won't even know whats going on. Until it is actually picked up.

Are You Not Entertained? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsqJFIJ5lLs#ws)

That is all true, we have a lot of distractions.

On the other hand the people in these protests are probably teens and 20s so they spend more time on Twitter and FaceBook and wouldn't watch the nightly news or pick up a newspaper. Maybe that is why we didn't know about it...it's a different world for the younguns.

Young people do tend to have a goofy brand of politics. A crowd of 20 somethings would probably turn me off.

Still.....if 20 some yr olds and people in their late 20s are going to be the catalyst. They would need to reach those that are younger and within the World of Media to make some sort of impact. Don't ya think?

I dunno...I mean those mobs in Philly work via FB and Twitter, right? So they could start with a few mobs and then once they started breaking and rioting I think the traditional news would start covering it. But if it is going to be peaceful then it is going to take more of a crowd to get noticed...also doing it over the weekend probably wasn't a good time for coverage. I guess they had jobs they had to be at M-F? The whole thing seems destined for failure.
