Of COURSE the information was wrong. We went to war to disarm Saddam of WMD's that he didn't have. OBVIOUSLY the information was wrong. Every single NIE he ever read about Iraqi WMD's and WMD programs had pages of caveats and qualifiers that pointed out the weakness of this source, the age and uncertainty of that source, the alternate interpretations of another source. The intelligence community was pretty damned sure that Saddam had WMD's but to say that there was NO DOUBT was a lie. To state with absolute certainty that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction and to imply that Saddam had been in cahoots with Al Qaeda before 9/11 gave Bush all the urgency he needed to go to war before Hans Blix could finish his work and tell him what we now all know: Saddam did NOT have stockpiles of WMD's and there was no need to invade Iraq to rid the country of something that wasn't there to begin with. I can't tell if you really are this obtuse or if it's an act. Clinton expressed his personal opinion. Bush stated a matter of fact. The difference is subtle, no doubt, and it does require a level of understanding of the elegant nuances of the English language that My Weekly Reader aficionados don't usually possess, but the difference does, in fact, exist. No one is suggesting that pretty much everyone was pretty sure that Saddam probably had WMD's. I am saying, that when Team Bush repeatedly claimed absolute certainty - the total absence of all doubt - they were lying because they knew that varying degrees of doubt did exist. Those doubts were even contained within the caveats and qualifiers written into the NIE's that were delivered to Bush himself. There WAS some doubt within our own intelligence community.
