Barack and Michelle Obama entered the White House not only with an awareness about what was coming, but also an understanding that they would face this kind of onslaught as the first African Americans to live there. There have been times that I’ve tried to imagine the weight they willingly took on their shoulders to avoid those kinds of entanglements – knowing what the slightest human imperfection would trigger.

It’s not that Republicans haven’t tried. We’ve seen attempts to blow up everything from a gun-running sting gone bad, mistreated veterans, the botched rollout of HealthCare.gov, the Bowe Bergdahl prisoner exchange, Secret Service debauchery, the IRS targeting, Hillary Clinton’s email server and Benghazi. That doesn’t even count all the times we’ve been subjected to complaints about teleprompters, the President’s golf game, family vacations, and the color of the suit the President wore for a press conference (to name just a few). But other than in the minds of the conspiracy-obsessed, nothing stuck.

As we approach the 2016 election and the end of this President’s second term, we’ll continue to see attempts to summarize his legacy of accomplishments. This one should be at the top of any list. That is partly because an attempt to de-legitimize him via scandal has failed. It is also why he will be positioned to be an asset to Hillary Clinton. But in ways that are probably not yet imagined, Barack and Michelle Obama have paved the way for countless young African Americans to be proud, and aspire to follow in their footsteps.

If you don't believe it, just read the level of anger and hostility to follow and you'll see for yourself the what's left of the few racist dinosaurs yet to do us all favor and just die and get it over with.

Well, the writer of that OP has some hero-worship going on....

Truth is -- Obama and his family have been treated with veritable kid gloves for the most part.

Obama's legacy will not be a good one, simply because he made too many screw ups. Especially in foreign policy.

History will not remember Obama kindly.

Barring some catastrophe as a result of his policies, he'll likely be remembered like Taft - middle of the road.

If it is based upon facts and measurable metrics, it will be not too bad, if it is based upon rhetoric and partisanship, it will be terrible.

Their legacy will be they did nothing for the country. They did nothing for minorities but spiteful symbolism.

Blacks as well as progressives know the men in womens bathroom thing was WRONG and unnecessary. Jerkoff will be viewed in the same category as Jerkoff Carter, a failure

While I personally think he'll come out in the middle, there's always the potential that a decade or more down the road something will happen as a direct result of his policies that necessitates reevaluating his place. For example, Bill Clinton left office in January of 2001, but the housing bubble he created didn't burst until 2007. George W. Bush left office January of 2009, but ISIL didn't rise in the ashes of his Iraq blunder until 2014.

Should not the Obama's be good examples for ALL children?

Being a "Divider-In-Chief" has damaged race relations. Anyone who voted for Obama should be ashamed!

Obama's legacy will be Fast & Furious, IRS Targeting, 4 dead Americans while nation building in Libya and the lawlessness that allowed it.
