hmmm...well more interesting factoids

"It has been remarked by older Germans that the worst thing about Nazi Germany was the poor quality of the toilet paper. It was so rough and scratchy that it was almost unusable, so many people used old issues of the Volkischer Beobachter instead because the paper was softer.[6]

Colored toilet paper in colors such as pink, lavender, light blue, light green, and light yellow (so that one could choose a color of toilet paper that matched or complemented the color of one's bathroom) was very commonly sold for the mass market in supermarkets in the United States in the 1960s and early 1970s. By the late 1970s, with the rise of concern about environmentalism, many people came to think that colored toilet paper was bad for the environment because of the dyes used in it, even though they are vegetable dyes which are harmless to the environment, and therefore the public stopped buying colored toilet paper and the manufacturers stopped making it. Today it is extremely rare to ever see plain unpatterned colored toilet paper for sale as was common in the 1960s and 1970s. It has been replaced by patterned toilet paper that is mostly white with the patterns in various colors."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toilet_paper

off on a tangent...
why is it so easy to convince people harmless things are bad for the environment, and that bad things are actually harmful?

Well he does appear to have been a rather naive individual. He thought his invention would make war so terrible it would no longer be feasible. It didn't quite work out that way.

Conley
06-28-2011, 09:02 PM
Yep, considering the weapons that have been developed since I don't think anything is going to stop war. It's hard to imagine anyone could possibly be that naive. Sure, if you're the only one with the machine gun I bet it'd be peaceful, but if both sides have them well...duh!

yep mr ak-47 himself:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikhail_Kalashnikov

good quotes from the man:

* "My work is my life, and my life is my work. I invented this assault rifle to defend my country. Today, I am proud that it has become for many synonymous with liberty."
* "It is the Germans who are responsible for the fact that I became a fabricator of arms. If not for them, I would have constructed agricultural machines. (...) If someone asks me how I can sleep at night knowing that my arms have killed millions of people, I respond that I have no problem sleeping, my conscience is clean. I constructed arms to defend my country."
* "Before attempting to create something new, it is vital to have a good appreciation of everything that already exists in this field."
* "I am still ready to shake hands with anyone who designs a better assault rifle than mine."
* "It is painful for me to see when criminal elements of all kinds fire from my weapon [...] I created this weapon primarily to safeguard our motherland"[17]
* "Anything that is complex is not useful and anything that is useful is simple. This has been my whole life's motto."
* "I would prefer to have invented a machine that people could use and that would help farmers with their work - for example a lawnmower."

Mister D
06-29-2011, 09:51 AM
Synonymous with liberty. ;D Well I guess it depends on how you look at it. The USSR flooded the Third World with arms during the Cold War.

Yeah that raised my eyebrow too. Still I can see how you'd have to rationalize a bit to be able to sleep at night. Those AKs have killed a lot of innocents too, but of course it's the man behind the trigger to blame.

MMC

Some more little facts about Erno Rubik.....

In the mid-1970s, Ernő Rubik worked at the Department of Interior Design at the Academy of Applied Arts and Crafts in Budapest.[11] Although it is widely reported that the Cube was built as a teaching tool to help his students understand 3D objects, his actual purpose was solving the structural problem of moving the parts independently without the entire mechanism falling apart. He did not realize that he had created a puzzle until the first time he scrambled his new Cube and then tried to restore it.[12] Rubik obtained Hungarian patent HU170062 for his "Magic Cube" in 1975. Rubik's Cube was first called the Magic Cube (Buvuos Kocka) in Hungary. The puzzle had not been patented internationally within a year of the original patent. Patent law then prevented the possibility of an international patent. Ideal wanted at least a recognizable name to trademark; of course, that arrangement put Rubik in the spotlight because the Magic Cube was renamed after its inventor.

In the early 1980s, he became editor of a game and puzzle journal called ...És játék ("...and games"), then became self-employed in 1983, founding the Rubik Stúdió, where he designed furniture and games. In 1987 he became professor with full tenure; in 1990 he became the president of the Hungarian Engineering Academy (Magyar Mérnöki Akadémia). At the Academy, he created the International Rubik Foundation to support especially talented young engineers and industrial designers

He is known to be an introvert and hardly accessible person, hard to contact or get for autographs. He typically does not attend speedcubing events. However, he attended the 2007 World Championship in Budapest.[2][3] He also gave a lecture and autograph session at the "Bridges-Pecs" conference ("Bridges between Mathematics and the Arts") in July, 2010.[4]

What does that have to do with buildings!? >:(

MMC
06-29-2011, 12:49 PM
He is an architect and designs buildings.....some with moving parts. As he was interested in what he states as space confined. So like Those restaurants that you see that revolve around on the tops of skyscrapers, rooms that move. As wikipedia states he teaches both engineers and industrial engineers. For those types of rooms with the likes of Labs and such.

On May 20, 1998, the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians performed a feat possibly never before duplicated in professional baseball. In the fifth inning of a game against the Pawtucket Red Sox, Indianapolis players hit for a "Homer Cycle". Pete Rose, Jr. opened the inning with a solo home run, Jason Williams connected for a 3–run shot, Glenn Murray slugged a grand slam, and Guillermo Garcia finished the scoring with a 2–run blast. The Indians won the game 11–4.[11]

Pretty cool stat.

The Thing, also known as the Great Seal bug, was one of the first covert listening devices (or "bugs") to use passive techniques to transmit an audio signal. Because it was passive, being energized and activated by electromagnetic energy from an outside source, it is considered a predecessor of current RFID technology.[1]

Theremin's device was used by the Soviet Union to spy on the United States. The device was embedded in a carved wooden plaque of the Great Seal of the United States. On August 4, 1945, a delegation from the Young Pioneer organization of the Soviet Union presented the bugged carving to U.S. Ambassador Averell Harriman, as a "gesture of friendship" to the USSR's World War II ally. It hung in the ambassador's Moscow residential study until it was exposed in 1952 during the tenure of Ambassador George F. Kennan.[3] The existence of the bug was accidentally discovered by a British radio operator who overheard American conversations on an open radio channel as the Russians were beaming radio waves at the ambassador's office. The Department of State found the device in the Great Seal carving after an exhaustive search of the American Embassy, and Peter Wright, a British scientist and former MI5 counterintelligence officer, eventually discovered how it worked.[4][5] Had the device never been discovered, it could easily have worked indefinitely.

A bug with no power source...pretty clever!

Francis Julius Bellamy, one-time Baptist minister and prominent member of the Christian Socialist movement, wrote the original USA Pledge of Allegiance, first published in the September 8, 1892, issue of The Youth’s Companion. Bellamy, then a committee chairman of the National Education Association, structured a public school programme around a flag raising ceremony and a flag salute—his "Pledge of Allegiance." This Pledge has since come under several—sometimes controversial—revisions. Bellamy’s original words were:

I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Bellamy considered adding the word "equality" to stand with "liberty and justice," but feared it would be too controversial. In 1924, against Bellamy’s wishes, the American Legion and Daughters of the American Revolution pressured the National Flag Conference to replace the words "my flag" with "the Flag of the United States of America." In 1954, under pressure from the Knights of Columbus, Congress officially added the words "under God."

Conley
10-13-2011, 03:31 PM
He wasn't born in Chi-Town but he did become famous there.

Killer...the first serial killer in the US:

:o :o

Herman Webster Mudgett (May 16, 1861[1] – May 7, 1896[2]), better known under the alias of Dr. Henry Howard Holmes, was one of the first documented American serial killers in the modern sense of the term. In Chicago at the time of the 1893 World's Fair, Holmes opened a hotel which he had designed and built for himself specifically with murder in mind, and which was the location of many of his murders. While he confessed to 27 murders, of which four were confirmed, his actual body count could be as high as 200.[3] He took an unknown number of his victims from the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, which was less than two miles away from his "World's Fair" hotel.

Wow.....I never knew that First serial killer in the country? Nah I can't go for that. There were 13 colonies before Chicago. I am sure we will have something come up from around then. :D

Uhm.....who would want JC, and don't say someone from the Arena Football league. Althought he might be able to do good there. He can at least bank the ball off the wall. Plus there is a way better chance he can pick up the blitz. http://politirant.com/Smileys/oldrant/evilgrin.gif

Weirdest thing. Well over a month ago I saw a picture of all three of them on Yahoo News. I didn't know they had had a child. I just made a mental note of it but didn't read the article.
