The carbine was to be used instead of a 1911 by officers. It wouldn't do what the M1 Grand would, nothing would. Uncle said he didn't like it, that it wasn't accurate and didn't hit hard enough. I love it. For certain things it's just right, not in place of a 308 but for certain things.

I grew up around people who made fun of blacks. When I was around 12 years old, I rode mini dirt bikes with the YMCA. They had a conference-type thing inviting other regions to our location and have races. A friend and I approached a group of black kids, and I told them something like "We're gonna win. You better watch out. My friend here is prejudiced." (I didn't even know what prejudiced means) Embarrassed, my friend then punched me in the shoulder and told me to shut up, and a black man came over, scolded us and told us to get back to our group.

I guess my point here is that it's easy to be a racist bigot if you don't know anything better. It takes effort and soul-searching to realize you were wrong and to grow out of that.

I think Robert Byrd showed tremendous growth by renouncing his racist ways. He recognizes that it doesn't erase the bad things he had done. I would welcome that kind of personal reform a million times from a controversial figure over somebody who is still stuck in their ways with "tunnel vision." I like how Mr. Byrd coined that metaphor.

Had he actually killed or physically hurt somebody I would think much differently of him, but I would still welcome the reform and remorse.
