Baloney.

Reagan presided over the largest numerical drop in the Misery Index that we've seen in a president's term. The Misery Index measure the actual effect the economy has on the citizens by factoring in unemployment and inflation.

That was no easy task, given that the index was so high when Carter left office.

As having been a working adult when reagan was elected in my mid 30s and being over 40 at the end of his terms. I KNOW

Reagans tax cuts were passed by a BIPARTISAN CONGRESS. The house was Democrat Majority Ruled when the vote for tax cuts passed. Read it in the liberal NY times.

Most self-identified Conservatives are every bit as enthusiastic about controlling others' lives, minds and property as anyone else - they simply tend to focus on different aspects of those things.

i'm torn among choosing trading weapons for hostages to iran, the unavenged death of 241 marines or the rape and murder of 4 catholic nuns as reagan's greatest accomplishment.

I've been booted on more conservative forums than lib shill sites like this one. The far right is very controlling and when submission is rejected, they are more shrill than a blending of Exotix, jimmy boy and OGIS all rolled into one! LOL!

Absolute nonsense. That deficit you're complaining about was the result of a lying Congress, which Reagan battled constantly. Finally, he agreed to raise taxes (tax and spenders, and liberals, were whining incessantly about his large initial tax cuts), but negotiated with BigGov types like Bob Dole and Tip O'Neill $3 in spending cuts for every $1 in tax increases.

They reneged. Hear that? They FLAT LIED. That's why Reagan wanted Line Item Veto: to CUT OUT the nonsense pork barrel crap that loaded up the tax increase bill.

That's why you had your deficit. We KNOW that, because REVENUES into the Government through the Reagan Economic Boom (the largest in the last century) looked like THIS:

Why does the economy do better when Democrats are in the White House?

Then again, the historical record shows that the economy has done quite a bit better under Democratic presidents since World War II, with faster GDP growth, more reductions in unemployment, greater industrial production, and higher corporate profits. Is this just statistical noise, or is it actually evidence that Democratic presidents (and policies) are better for the American economy? A study appearing in the April issue of the American Economic Review tries to find the root cause of the economic growth gap between Democrats and Republicans.

In Presidents and the U.S. Economy: An Econometric Exploration (PDF), authors Alan Blinder and Mark Watson compare the economic records of Republican and Democratic presidential administrations, focusing on the period since World War II when data on gross domestic product and employment have been collected in a consistent manner. They find GDP tends to grow much faster under Democratic presidents (averaging 4.33% per year) than Republican presidents (averaging 2.54% per year).

The debt under Reagan was a rounding error compared to the debt under Obama.
