They weren't sane they were scared. Because when their personal money train is threatened dems and repubs actually can and do work together quite well.
One example as you have pointed out is the case where the public got up in arms about spending and debt. So they made promises, shook hands, and passed an act they never had any intention of honoring. Now debt ceiling icreases barely make the news. Why? Because they dangled other bright shiny objects to distract us and it worked. There is absolutely no excuse for that on our part. None.
Another less known time is when a Capitol Hill office was served a warrant and searched. Then the "two major parties " were suddendly all bout the Constitution and found a clause they could interpret to hide behind, essentially stating that their offices were above and exempt from due process. They gotta have somewhere to keep track of the bribes and back room deals after all.
Also didn't the overwhemlming majority vote to attack the wrong country in 2003?
I've learned to be very concerned and start searching for under reported stories and missing billions when the two openly work together.
