Here we have a group of private citizens who mobilize to help their neighbors during a disaster and a big government type wants to stop that.
he wants to force them to receive government training and purchase a permit.
Government wants to to prevent people from helping their neighbors. Unbelievable.

And I'm sure that the person promoting this law considers himself a staunch conservative.

I saw that. Ridiculous. People need to tell the government to get the heck out of the way.

I'm not there but know a couple of people who are. From what I understand the citizens are doing more than the government is as far as help, meaning getting water and other things to those in need. Pretty sad day when that happens.

There should be no permit.
However, I encourage the two groups to coordinate with one another. I think first responders should know about where these volunteers are, and what they are doing, so that they can react if necessary. A voluntary registration system would work.

I'm with Peter, why should they even have to register? Time is critical and messing around with more mandated government bureaucracy is nonsense. People can't even move now days without getting the long finger of the government out of their ass first.

Government should never discourage people from helping others. This power hungry legislator should be encouraging these people and using them as an example of how people should respond instead of placing obstacles in their way.
He should be voted out of office for exposing this idiotic mind-set. I hope they send his ass packing.

You want to know where the volunteers are? Then look.

In a catastrophe like La is in, volunteeers are a must to save lives, there just isnt enough first responders.
I cant even imagine what his reasoning is

You guys see no reason why citizens shouldn't voluntarily coordinate with first responders?
Really?

His Reasoning is that he believes that's what government is for. People can't help people, only government can do that. He believes people are helpless on their own.

No, I don't.
I don't need to coordinate with government to help another person in a time of need. Coordinating with government is useless. It's a waste of time. Many of these people didn't have the time to waste.
This Cajun Navy is what the American spirit is all about. I'm sure that's a punch line to some people here.
