'Some of us will die but I pray it won't be a lot': Hurricane Matthew nears Haiti, Jamaica -CBC New (http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/hurricane-matthew-caribbean-1.3788012)

Vulnerable Haiti braced for flash floods and violent winds from the extremely dangerous Hurricane Matthew as the powerful storm kept on a path early Monday aiming at the hemisphere's poorest country.

The eye of the approaching Category 4 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 230 km/h late Sunday, was expected to pass to the east of Jamaica and then cross over or be very close to the southwestern tip of Haiti late Monday or early Tuesday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said. It was predicted to hit the lightly populated eastern tip of Cuba on Tuesday afternoon.

Forecasters said as much as 100 centimetres of rain could fall on some isolated areas of Haiti, raising fears of deadly mudslides and floods in the heavily deforested country where many families live in flimsy houses with corrugated metal roofs.

"Some of us will die but I pray it won't be a lot," said Serge Barionette in the southern town of Gressier, where a river recurrently bursts its banks during serious storms.

Hopefully international aid is able to get in quickly and offer support once the storm pasts. I don't imagine Haiti is going to fare very well considering they are still recovering from the 2010 earthquake.

But nothing like Haiti it would appear .. plus they are more equipped to handle it.

Looks like it's going rake the eastern half of the Florida peninsula pretty hard, too.

I have family on the east coast, so I'm getting very concerned.

I live further inland, but we could be in for a pounding too.

Not looking forward to another long power outage like we dealt with in 2004.

Gov. Nikki Haley ~ Million-Plus Urged to Flee Coastal South Carolina

South Carolina began massive preparations to evacuate almost a quarter of its people Tuesday as Hurricane Matthew crawled toward a weekend rendezvous with the state's Atlantic coast.

Gov. Nikki Haley said that unless the storm's course changes drastically overnight, a complete evacuation will begin at 3 p.m. ET Wednesday in the historic city of Charleston and other coastal communities.

The region is home to 1.1 million people, almost 25 percent of the state's entire population — not including beach-goers and other tourists.

"We don't do voluntary or mandatory.
It is an evacuation," Haley said at a news conference.
"Our goal is to make sure you get 100 miles away from the coast."

State emergency officials made plans to reverse traffic on all four lanes of Interstate 26 from Charleston to Columbia, the capital.

Authorities posted aninteractive map of evacuation routes (http://www.dot.state.sc.us/getting/evacuation.aspxhttp://scdot.maps.arcgis.com/apps/MapSeries/index.html?appid=eea77264247b41669486b8f63bdf2937) showing lane reversals on numerous other state and local roads ahead of the total shutdown of coastal South Carolina on Wednesday.

You don't want to be caught in this," Haley said.

She said buses were being sent to Charleston for people without their own transportation — along with National Guard members to support more than 3,700 law enforcement officers who will flood the area to make sure everyone gets out.

Matthew isn't expected to arrive until the weekend, but Haley said she issued the warning now because "it's not going to be a fast evacuation.

It could take up to several hours."

AGW is the single greatest fraud ever perpetrated on society. Yet, after all the hand wringing and hysterical claims, no one seems to want to touch the FACT that we have been in a warming phase long before man wandered the planet and the gas engine discovered.

I can remember when I was a kid the lunatics were concerned and warning about global cooling. I guess that fraud didn't work so they went to the man caused warming side. The level of arrogance it takes to presume man can cause climate change can only be promoted by a Godless societal belief that MAN is more powerful than God or the planet.

Stunning.

Well, it is really hard to explain unless you live here. The reason so many do not is the question of where in the hell do you go? West? Nothing but everglades....North, that is where the storm is heading.....South, that is where it will hit first.

I think I would rather take my chances in a building that has stood since 1965 than be caught in a traffic jam trying to get out of town.

Hurricane Matthew became the Atlantic’s first Category 5 storm in over nine years (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/capital-weather-gang/wp/2016/10/01/hurricane-matthew-became-the-atlantics-first-category-5-storm-in-over-nine-years/)
Hurricane Matthew became the first Category 5 storm in the Atlantic in more than nine years. It was the capstone to a day of incredible intensification — the hurricane rapidly strengthened from a tropical storm on Thursday to a destructive force of nature on Friday.

Although a track east of the U.S. coastline looks most probable, Florida and the East Coast are most definitely not out of the woods yet and should be paying very close attention to Hurricane Matthew in the coming days.

On Saturday morning, Matthew was a Category 4 with peak winds of 155 mph — just shy of the Category 5 mark. It is common for the intensity of a hurricane to fluctuate, and this storm is extremely powerful and dangerous.

Seems like the only actual advantage of those over old, used one-gallon plastic milk jugs, is that they stack neatly, save room and look kinda cool.

I was there once for business (litigation in the area) and once for vacation. The Marriott on the beach- you get a ground floor room and can walk from the room straight onto the beach with no board walk in the way - lots of sand and clearer waters than VA beach.

Best to bookmark it for viewing tomorrow as right now, since it is LIVE it is nightime and will show only a black and white shot of the waves tossing and turning! There are other parts of Florida you can also view in real time here by simply scrolling down a little and clicking on the picture icons of the places you wish to view in the Sunshine State. Not too much sunshine lately though!

However, please be advised that when a bad storm or hurricane, tornado, etc. is in the area it is advised not to turn on electric items such as the Internet, etc. due to lightning concerns. So, please be GUIDED by that!

The camera will momentarily show a daytime shot before it goes into LIVE mode, so please be aware of that.

I think the Dominican Republic must have escaped serious destruction because I can't find anything about them in the main media outlets. Disagree Peter, a few degrees either way makes a big difference in what happens. Thankfully it went 20 miles out into the ocean instead of making landfall around the cape. What difference you ask? About 60 plus in sustained winds and if you're sitting in a rv like I am that makes a world of difference. The recorded history of Haiti (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haiti) began on 4 December 1492 when the European navigator Christopher Columbus (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Columbus) happened upon a large island in the region of the western Atlantic Ocean that later came to be known as the Caribbean. It was inhabited by the Taíno (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ta%C3%ADno_people), anArawakan (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arawak_peoples) people, who variously called their island Ayiti, Bohio, or Kiskeya (Quisqueya). Columbus promptly claimed the island for theSpanish Crown (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_Empire), naming it La Isla Española ("the Spanish Island"), later Latinized (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latinisation_of_names) to Hispaniola (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hispaniola).

Should we rebuild the entire world ??

Disagree Peter, a few degrees either way makes a big difference in what happens. Thankfully it went 20 miles out into the ocean instead of making landfall around the cape. What difference you ask? About 60 plus in sustained winds and if you're sitting in a rv like I am that makes a world of difference. Bands on the back side were worse than when it came through......I'm a few miles from Orlando.

I agree that people in RVs have to pay special attention to major storms.

But some of the coverage in the lead up to this storm was irresponsible and silly. Fox was "reporting" that if you stayed home you are going to die. As were your children.....

I don't want to sound cold hearted but are we going to send a billion dollar in aid there? Probably,,,,,,support and protect the world while we are trillions in debt.

Yes we will as we've always done. So that the idiot Colin Kaepernicks can label this nation racist.

A minor storm can be quite a problem in an RV.

It would take a storm of biblical proportions to get me to abandon my home and just leave it up to fate.

You should pay closer attention.

There are hurricanes in the Atlantic and typhoons in the Pacific every year.

It was just a few years ago that we went through the entire alphabet and started on numbers when we ran out of letters.

Just because we haven't had several major landfalls doesn't mean the AGW predictions are untrue.

What is worse than who is right global warming or no global warming, what is worse is us fighting against one another being divided. Especially in times when our world really needs us to be united in our humanity, so we can survive together. Who cares why there is a storm? There is a storm, let's help together. If we are polluting the earth, then lets stop together. Then if that was the cause it wont be being perpetrated any longer we will have evolved from being lower minded.

We only pollute the earth because we haven't learnt new ways to live that are clean and do not destroy our earth. But it is a sorrow because it is so simple. We could be doing it already if we wanted to. It is not the argument that counts right now it is just action.

Of course there is natural warming and cooling it has been happening since this earths crust cooled enough to create crust. We naturally go through warming and cooling we go from snowball earth to fire and hell, and back to ice again. But that does not mean we have the green light to pollute and ravage the earth.

We are in a moment in time. We are at a time where conditions here on earth were just right for life like ours to survive in these conditions. If we change the conditions that we live in, then conditions will no longer be sufficient for life like ours. Do you see what I am saying here? You do not have to be a rocket scientist to know that it takes oxygen and water for us to be alive. If we destroy those conditions we are toast. The argument about global warming needs to end and instead be focused on trying to keep the conditions necessary for life like ours to continue on into the future.

Of course it will not last forever and eventually we are doomed, but in geological time, that will be many lifetimes forward into the distant future. For now we are stewards of the earth with a great responsibility. We are stewards because we do have the power to destroy or save the earth. Our choices decide the fate of our future children.

Stunning.

Man does have the ability to destroy the planet. E=mc2
We can also fill the seas with toxins and oil spills, and kill the sea life, that will chain react to the end of our lives as well.
We can pollute our fresh water systems and have no clean water to drink to support our life
We can fill our air with pollution and poison
We can render land unusable a toxic waste heap
We do this all the time. We do have the power of the gods, it is not arrogant it is reality.
If we do not put ourselves in check we will end our existence.
We are like a runaway train that does not know it is headed for a cliff.
We are much more advanced than this.
Only the greed of a few and the ignorance of a few is keeping us in the dark ages.
Let go of the greed, or let go of life as we know it.

Death by a thousand cuts none of which kill you. Basically what you're saying is that the government has license to unilaterally waste up to about a $1bn dollars since that expenditure represents only a 'few pennies' .... but let's get right to it because you're haughty, snarky and dumb. Death toll jumps to 800...

Hurricane Matthew: Haiti dead reach 800 as south awaits aid
Fri, 07 Oct 2016 - The UN warns it could take days for the full impact of Hurricane Matthew in Haiti to emerge, as the death toll soars to more than 800 dead.

The death toll has doubled, and may rise, as rescue teams gain access to southern areas cut off by the storm. The World Food Programme's Carlos Veloso says some of the hard-hit towns can only be reached by air or sea. Many of the deaths in Haiti were in the south-western coast, which suffered the full force of the hurricane this week. Hurricane Matthew is currently battering the coastline of the US state of Florida but has been downgraded to a Category Two storm, with sustained wind speed dropping to 110mph (177km/h). Category Five is the strongest on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale of hurricane intensity.

Rescue efforts are under way to assess the destruction left in the wake of the most powerful Caribbean storm in a decade. Haiti's Civil Protection Agency on Friday doubled the death toll from the hurricane from 400 to more than 800. A definitive number is taking time to obtain because of the intensity of the damage to remote areas that are inaccessible because of flood water. At least one major town in the south - Jeremie - has been 80% destroyed, with aerial footage showing the scale of destruction with hundreds of flattened houses.

Three other towns in the south are reporting dozens of fatalities, according to Reuters news agency. The mayor of the village of Chantal told the news agency that 86 people had died and 20 more were missing. Civil Protection Agency official Saint-Victor Jeune said his team had found another 82 bodies in the mountainous outskirts of Jeremie. But they were unable to register these with the Haitian authorities because of poor communications, he said speaking to Associated Press news agency. The storm passed directly through the Tiburon peninsula - encompassing Haiti's entire southern coast - driving the sea inland and flattening homes with winds of up to 230km/h (145mph) and torrential rain.

If you're doing so piss-poor financially that you'd begrudge your govt spending a few pennies of your taxes to aid poverty stricken disaster victims because those few pennies would make the difference between putting food on your table or going hungry yourself, then govt disaster relief is the last of your worries. You should be more worried about trying to find and learn a marketable skill so you can get a better job that pays more than minimum wage.

But in the meantime, our govt and most of our society recognizes that wealthy countries like ours have a moral responsibility to help disaster victims in poor countries and that moral responsibility trumps (no pun intended) your greedy, penny pinching selfishness.

Therefore, the aid money is going to get spent in spite of people like you. And if you don't like it, that's just tough shit. Either learn to live with it or get the hell out of my country.

The US tax payer dollars sent to Haiti through the US government will go to the Haitian government. That means only a token amount will get to those who need it. So, if you want to help the Hairian people, donate to a non government organization.

You might be right about that.
I like your answer.
Then what does make a god? In your opinion, at least since it seems all of us have our own views, and rightly so I might add. Just curious.

For me the regular peoples idea of god really bothers me. Even when I was little the thought of a man sitting on a throne just bothered me. To be honest it seems silly. If God was just another man then why should I venerate him. To me when I think of God it is something beyond just a man. More the way Jesus talked about God. I see it as that everything is the breath of life and it pervades throughout all things time and space. I see it as without description or name. I see it as you cant put a name to it or touch it but it is all around you and what you are and is the very breath of life that moves the universe. But it is even beyond that.

Jesus said and what can the kingdom of heaven be compared to, it is as tiny as a mustard seed, it is the smallest of all seeds but when it sprouts and grows all of the birds can come and live in its branches. Something like that sorry I don't remember the exact words. But I think there is something really wonderful that he is saying here. I am afraid it would be too complicated to explain and would probably be very disagreeable to many so I will hold on that one.

He also said we are the temple, and things like the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Modern day Christianity would call it blasphemous. But they say that kind of talk is blasphemy, but that is the very words from the one who their religion is based upon. Yeah the council of Nicea did a real number on the people. They twisted up the religion to use it to rule the people, and stole the truth away so everyone would be blind. But Jesus said he hid the truth in his words so that only those who had the eyes to see would be able to see, only those who had ears to hear would hear. That is why we still have some wisdom that is handed down to us, because the council did not know they were putting secret messages in the bible to us from Jesus. They really messed up. Jesus did it right. He got his message past those blind tricksters. The message lives.

But as for god, to me Gods, and God are two very different things. If it be that a creator came and made us then I would see him much like mansanto. But I see it as much bigger than that. That is not to say there are not those who we would consider Gods. We do not know what we cannot see. Unless of course we develop those eyes that can see. As I remember hearing the name of God is un-utterable and no name can be given to describe god.
