View Full Version : Democrats and "Flyover Country"

Well, in the recent presidential election, Hillary Clinton won both the entire West Coast and the entire northeast, but very little else. (She did manage to win Minnesota--albeit by a much smaller margin than Democratic candidates normally do--and Virginia; the latter, due to the tendencies of Northern Virginia, near DC, which has propelled the state into the Democratic ranks.)

And, of course, Hawaii. And Nevada and New Mexico (the latter's having a very large Hispanic population).

Do Democrats really believe that they can continue to ignore the folks in "Flyover Country"--perhaps even display open contempt for them--and still win national elections?

I suspect we have a larger portion of undereducated and just down right dumb people here in the Midwest. After all here in Kansas we re-elected Sam Brownback in the midst of a faltering economy and massive budget deficits and cuts all due solely to his fiscal plan's failure. The average moron in the street didn't care as long as he was pro-life, pro-gun, and had an "R" in front of his name. Kansas is its own worst enemy.

No, they are definitely voting against their self interest. The farm bill is opposed by republicans every time it comes up. Farming is the major industry here in the Midwest. But a large portion of them are willing to risk losing their livelihood as long as they can keep their guns and bitch about abortion. With republican majorities in Washington they may be in for very rude surprise.

Trump staged himself as a church-going, honest, patriotic, hard working, guy who represent the average joe. He's really an elitist who eats pizza with a fork, has allegedly never driven a car, and announced his VP pick from a gold chair.

Trump just settled his lawsuit after ripping off thousands of ordinary people with another hustle. Th $25 million settlement won't even get them half their money back.

Trump went into flyover states, into working class neighborhoods, and somehow convinced him that he was one of them. It could be the biggest con job in American history.

If the Republicans are smart enough to replace Chappaquiddick (https://www.google.com/search?safe=off&rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS710US710&q=Chappaquiddick+Ted&spell=1&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwif7rzp7rfQAhXJ7SYKHSKCB1UQvwUIGigA) Ted's Immigration law, the Democrats will see the spigot turned off. Of the 3,143 counties and equivalents, your story does say Hillary Clinton won 487 of them; Donald Trump won 2,623.

It was 52 counties. Those counties account for the bulk of the votes for Clinton. I did start looking at some of the other 400 or so counties. Many are bedroom communities for companies that are in the 52 counties.

Republicans need to work on assimilation. We can cut off immigration from all of the third world nations. We can once again allow white immigrants from European, Christian nations. In 30-40 years the problem will right itself.

Maybe the people in flyover states should make those states worth visiting?

I have a hunch that the people who mock "elitists," "safe spaces," and the pedagogy in general are from the flyover states. The friendly country charm on the surface seems to be masking deep contempt for liberals.

I do almost all of my business on the coasts, but I have traveled to many flyover states and I have to say that there's no poverty like the poverty I've seen there. I'm talking about pooping-in-a-tomato-can poverty.
Theres that liberal elitism that cost yall the election.

I have "deep contempt" for elitists and safe spaces, indeed (the latter being defined, roughly, as an area in which no competing views are allowed, lest they should upset and contaminate the hearers of those views).

As for "pedagogy," that is a rather broad term. Whereas I certainly embrace learning, I do certainly have contempt or those who would impose their own views, while suppressing others; and pretending that conservative views simply are inconsistent with real learning.

No doubt, there are pockets of poverty in these states. (The delta region of Mississippi, and Appalachia--which covers parts of several different states--leap to mind.) But to claim that these states are entirely beset by poverty is simply disingenuous.

And, in any case, we are speaking of whether or not these people deserve contempt--not whether or not they are impoverished.
