Welfare spending jumps 32% in four years
(http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2012/oct/18/welfare-spending-jumps-32-percent-four-years/)

Welfare spending has grown substantially over the past four years, reaching $746 billion in 2011 — or more than Social Security, basic defense spending or any other single chunk of the federal government (http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/federation/) — according to a new memo by the Congressional Research Service (http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/congressional-research-service/).

The steady rise in welfare spending, which covers more than 80 programs primarily designed to help low-income Americans, got a big boost from the 2009 stimulus and has grown, albeit somewhat more slowly, in 2010 and 2011. One reason is that more people are qualifying in the weak economy, but the federal government (http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/federation/) also has broadened eligibility so that more people qualify for programs.

Obama has made things worse. The OP is just one slice of the proof.

The figures are real, but when mixed with unemployment, we see there is a lie somewhere...in the unemployment figures! Ah, next Monday is going to be a hoot!

Buying votes isn't cheap and when it's someone else's money, cost is no object.

What really bothers me is when working people have to take welfare (like food stamps) in order to make ends meet. What is holding back wages from growing enough to keep people afloat?

We as a society need to take care of our own but more importantly we need leadership that doesn't put us in this situation, we need a leader who doesn't put his ego and personal agenda ahead of the people he vowed to represent, turning his back on coal miners, rejecting the Canadian pipe line, virtually shutting down NASA, cutting our military while handing billions of tax payer monies to "green energy" companies who sent jobs overseas and then failing completely. So I ask you, how's that hope and change working for you?

I'm speculating but I believe its a lack of unionization. Wages are stagnant, among other reasons because employes have very little bargaining power when It comes to improving wages and benefits. They get whatever the employer feels comfortable offering them. Those who are represented by labor unions as a rule always see their wages and benefits improve or at least hold steady in many cases.

Organized crime never helps the economy. Extortion should be illegal.

That's "expensive."

Hmm, who is it that is printing 40 billion per month to buy the bad paper of the banksters and wall street?

Who is it who is wiping out small savers with zero interest rate and big time inflation on food and fuel?

Are you really this gullible or is this all just a silly, childish act with you?

I'm not sure what you mean by that statement; if your mindset is saying unions are the equivalent to organize crime and that they commit extortion, then you and I will have to agree to disagree on this thread as we will be unable to have rational dialogue.

Union leadership controls and intimidates it's members. Hell yeah.
