View Full Version : Chuck Schumer's tirade

The new Minority Leader, Chuck Schumer, just yesterday lit into Donald Trump with some simply astounding words!

He began his tirade with the revealing words, "With all due respect." And I have never yet heard those words without also hearing something to follow that entirely vitiated that perfunctory reference to "respect."

Next, he announced that this country "cannot afford a Twitter presidency"--an apparent reference to the fact that Donald Trump often tweets his thoughts.

And he further warned of an impending "failed presidency," due to Trump's cabinet selections.

I have never in my life seen such utter confrontation from a Minority Leader (or a Majority Leader, either) toward an incoming president of the other party.

Does anyone else see a total lack of civility in this?

The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.

Then-Minority Leader, Mitch McConnell, was simply stating that Republicans--and conservatives--would wish, above all else, to limit the damage that a liberal, Democratic president could do, by holding him to a single term.

There is surely nothing uncivil about that.

To announce in advance, however, that one expects a "failed" presidency--from someone who has not even assumed office yet!--is surely unprecedented in the modern era...

I love it. If Trump says or "tweets" something it's like a message from above accompanied by appropriate music, if a Democrat says something it's a tirade! Don't you just love it....

Well, I really do not know whether it is Chuck Schumer's "number one political priority"; but it does seem rather important to him: http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2017/01/schumer-says-hell-fight-to-keep-supreme-court-seat-vacant.html

Among other things, he says that he will "oppose [any SCOTUS nominee sent to him] tooth and nail," since he just cannot imagine anyone that the Republicans could support, that he, too, could support.

Please tell me, then, what sort of incivility was directed toward then-President-Elect Barack Obama, by the Republican leader in the Senate.

Did he claim that we could all expect a "failed" presidency?

Seriously...

I see arrogance and a desire to have congress seem as though they are better than the citizenry, but lack of civility to an incoming President goes to McConnell who announced he would NEVER work with the newly elect Obama and would work hard to make him a one term President.

Mitch was perfectly willing to stuff Merrick Garland in the dumpster without so much as a hearing. Ted Cruz said, when it looked like Hillary might win, that the GOP senate would be perfectly willing to have SCOTUS exist with only eight members until a republican could get into the white house.

Guess what.... what's good for the goose is good for the gander. We'll have eight until 2021 unless Notorious RBG kicks, then we'll only have seven.

Republican constituents at home WANTED their representatives to slow down bill passage. They want fewer laws -- not more. What you saw as obstructionism, they viewed as being represented.

The only ones with fewer laws are corporations, who are making profits from poisoning the US and us. There are more laws on the books for taking away rights from citizens, spying on us, taxing us at higher rates than the upper 1% and making sure corporations and the political religious cult of born again evangelical are allowed to steal more general budget money for corporate socialism.
