I'm guessing he was in prison because he was a convicted felon.

That's the starting point. Releasing him with the presumed available knowledge that his life might be in danger is the issue.

Had the suggestion that his release might have been problematic for him, wouldn't it make sense to consider alternatives? Like a protection program?

Or, alternatively as I earlier suggested - "hey, you're free, I don't give a shit if you get capped by your former boys, I got my press coverage".

my only thought is that this fellow put this in motion the day he decided to commit a felony. IF he hadn't broken the law originally, he would probably still be alive. It is the choices we make in life that have consequences. Did he deserve to be gunned down? Maybe not in our minds, but then again, we don't know his entire history, pre- prison.
