View Full Version : Political Cults of Personality

When Obama became president, conservatives were quick to point out how a cult of personality formed around him. And they were largely right. Many of Obama's supporters were almost indistinguishable from cultists. Yet a similar cult of personality has formed around Trump. Granted, this does not apply to ALL supporters of Obama or Trump, but it's generalization based in a large measure of truth. Any criticism of their dear leader, no matter how reasoned or principled, is taken personally and responded to emotionally by many of their followers. And just like the typical cultist, they are largely unaware of their own bizarre behavior. That's not to imply there is no intellectual substance behind their zeal, but that substance, to the extent it exists, is often the victim of cognitive dissonance. In other words, when the actions of their dear leader do not align with their saccharine political rhetoric, their supporters rush to rationalize or dismiss it. And this sort of behavior is by no means unique to Americans. Virtually every tyrant, autocrat, despot and charismatic thug in history had a cult of personality form around them. Loyalty to party or person has always been the bane of free societies, including our own.

I will speak for myself, I am loyal to neither party, I am a registered independent. I am loyal to the agenda trump represents as opposed to the lefts agenda. I truly believe trumps ideals are better for the country.
I have no love for trump, I worked for him for almost 4 yrs. His wife ivana when trump plaza opened in atlantic city walked onto the floor and pointed to a pregnant coctail waitress and told us to tell her shes fired she wanted only sexxy coctail waitress that had a look of class.

I defend trump to defend his agenda not the person

It's a disturbing trend, for sure.

O'bammy wasn't a cult much like Bernie isn't a socialist.

But history always repeats.

When is the beer hall putsch scheduled for again?

Many followers behave like cultists though. Trump's Obama's, Clinton's, Sanders's. I used to be a cult follower of Reagan. But now only of Goldwater.

Like how, give some examples. What does it mean in our society to be a cult of personality icon and follower?

Simply voting for and/or supporting? Or something else?

For a long time in my mind Reagan couldn't have even done anything wrong. I still think many of his ideas and principles were good, but there were things he did I eventually came to see as wrong, like the Iran/Contra Scandal, or Trickle-down economics.

I think that's the point of the OP. I never did get a picture of Reagan, hang it on the wall, and worship it. Some sound like they did.
