It is a sad statement on society that those days are long gone, never to return.

In those days, many people were illiterate and uninformed, and most didn't have the right to vote (non-whites, women, so forth), not to mention people couldn't just up and travel to DC. The line at the White House would be very short and made up mostly of representatives, of which there were less.
