NASA and Russia may explore Venus together (http://www.space.com/36064-nasa-russia-venus-mission-partnership-talks.html)

I had not realized that Russia has already landed probes on the surface.

NASA scientists are meeting with representatives from the Russian Academy of Sciences' Space Research Institute (IKI) this week, to continue discussion of a possible collaboration (http://www.space.com/35333-russia-nasa-venus-mission-venera-d.html) on the institute's upcoming Venera-D mission to Venus, NASA officials announced last week.

Russia launched 16 space probes toward Venus as part of the Venera series between 1961 and 1983, including the only probes to ever successfully land on the surface of hellish planet (http://www.space.com/18551-venera-13.html). The IKI Venera-D mission is scheduled to launch sometime in the 2020s. The mission would include an orbiter and a lander, and possibly a solar-powered airship that would fly through Venus' upper atmosphere.

"This potential collaboration makes for an enriching partnership to maximize the science results from Venera-D, and continue the exploration of this key planet in our solar system," Adriana Ocampo, who leads the Joint Science Definition Team working on a report regarding the potential partnership, said in the statement. Scientists from NASA will meet with representatives from IKI to "[identify] shared science objectives for Venus exploration," according to a statement (https://www.nasa.gov/feature/jpl/nasa-studying-shared-venus-science-objectives-with-russian-space-research-institute) from the agency.

I knew the Russians launched probes.....but I never knew they landed one there. Tell NASA to quit dicking around. Focus on getting that Base on the Moon built and the Space facility to build ships up and going.

I agree.

I agree.

We got enough resources checking out the Kepler planets. Let not waste anymore working with the Russians and Venus. We know now.....we can't inhabit Venus.

The Base on the Moon and the Space Dock should be the priority.

I don't mind the proposed research in the OP.

There was a thread a while back about cloud cities and Venus.

Aha, more proof that Trump was in collusion with the Russians.

Russia probably needs some technology they can't build themselves and their friends in NASA want to help them and make a propaganda event out of it like we did with the Apollo-Soyuz "mission." The NASA that in the past has helped our supposed enemies. The NASA that is more interested in pushing global warming propaganda down our throats instead of pushing past low orbit space stations where we have to pay Russia $87 million a seat to take our astronauts to it. I hope president Trump purges all that crap out of NASA and put them back on the path they were created for in the first place. Any cooperation in space programs we do should be with free countries who share our values and even then it should be cooperation, not us giving up technology that could be used against us.
