Democrats Trade Places on War and McCarthyism (https://consortiumnews.com/2017/03/23/democrats-trade-places-on-war-and-mccarthyism/)

Exclusive: The anti-Russia hysteria gripping the Democratic Party marks a “trading places” moment as the Democrats embrace the New Cold War and the New McCarthyism, flipping the script on Republicans, writes Robert Parry.

By Robert Parry

Caught up in the frenzy to delegitimize Donald Trump by blaming his victory on Russian meddling, national Democrats are finishing the transformation of their party from one that was relatively supportive of peace to one pushing for war, including a confrontation with nuclear-armed Russia.

This “trading places” moment was obvious in watching the belligerent tone of Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee on Monday as they impugned the patriotism of any Trump adviser who may have communicated with anyone connected to Russia.

Ranking Democrat, Rep. Adam Schiff of California, acknowledged that there was no hard evidence of any Trump-Russia cabal, but he pressed ahead with what he called “circumstantial evidence of collusion,” a kind of guilt-by-association conspiracy theory that made him look like a mild-mannered version of Joe McCarthy.

Schiff cited by name a number of Trump’s aides and associates who – as The New York Times reported – were “believed to have some kind of contact or communications with Russians.” These Americans, whose patriotism was being questioned, included foreign policy adviser Carter Page, Trump’s second campaign manager Paul Manafort, political adviser Roger Stone and Trump’s first national security adviser retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn.

[...]

Partisan Democrats have taken up the mantle of new McCarthyism and imperialism, according to veteran investigative journalist, Robert Parry.

I wonder how long their sham investigations will go on before they stop. It's not like they're going to find anything. I guess it just depends on how long their gullible, partisan followers allow themselves to be swept up by this deluded fantasy.

Meanwhile, Americans have real problems to worry about, like healthcare, jobs, and education, among other things. But Democrats would rather waste everyone's time with a pathetic witch hunt.

I don't know that I'd say they've switched places, as that would imply Republicans have stopped. Republicans still use "socialist," "communist," and "Muslim" or "Muslim-sympathizer" as button words to slap on their opponents and make them sound evil. The Democrats have just joined them.

That's a mischaracterization of what Chomsky was saying.

Gibbs: Let us turn to the role of the media in reporting alleged Russian interference in the US electoral process. Mainstream journalists have called Trump a puppet of Russia, a modern version of the Manchurian Candidate. Others have criticized the media for accepting unsubstantiated claims about Russian influence, and reporting such claims as facts. Normon Soloman and Serge Halimi, for example, stated that press reporting on this issue amounts to a mass hysteria reminiscent of the McCarthy era, while Seymour Hersh called the media reporting on Russia “outrageous.”3 What is your view of this situation?
Chomsky: My guess is that most of the world is just collapsing in laughter. Suppose all the charges are true, I mean every single one, it is so amateurish by US standards that you can hardly even laugh. What the US does is the kind of thing I described in Italy in 1948. Case after case like that, not hacking or spreading rumors in the media; but saying look, we’re going to starve you to death or kill you or destroy you unless you vote the way we want. I mean that’s what we do.

It's disappointing to see someone whose intelligence I genuinely respect fall for such a transparently inapt and inappropriate comparison. McCarthyism was about blacklisting individuals for Constitutionally protected activities involving free association, about jailing and otherwise sanctioning people for failing to inform on and denounce their friends and associates, and about government equating dissent with treason. There is absolutely no similarity between that and efforts to expose ties between the Russian government and many of Trump's campaign advisors and current staff members - none.

Democrats are conducting investigations into people based on nothing but self-serving allegations and innuendo fueled by anti-Russian hysteria. I'd say the similarities are quite striking. And I'm sure you're aware that McCarthyism didn't just happen overnight. It built up momentum over a period of many years before reaching its apex. Your tortured logic does not stand up to even the slightest scrutiny. He is clearly referring to the ACTUAL hypocrisy of the US government, not the amateurish nature of the SUPPOSED Russian hacks. The entire point of his answer is to highlight the chutzpah and hypocrisy of the US political class, not to mock the amateurish nature of something he won't even concede happened.

My guess is that most of the world is just collapsing in laughter. Suppose all the charges are true, I mean every single one, it is so amateurish by US standards that you can hardly even laugh. Case after case like that, not hacking or spreading rumors in the media; but saying look, we’re going to starve you to death or kill you or destroy you unless you vote the way we want. I mean that’s what we do.

Take the famous 9/11, let’s think about it for a minute. It was a pretty awful terrorist act. It could have been a lot worse. Now let’s suppose that instead of the plane being downed in Pennsylvania by passengers, suppose it had hit its target, which was probably the White House. Now suppose it had killed the president. Suppose that plans had been set for a military coup to take over the government. And right away, immediately 50,000 people were killed, 700,000 tortured. A bunch of economists were brought in from Afghanistan, let’s call them the “Kandahar Boys,” who very quickly destroyed the economy, and established a dictatorship which devastated the country. That would have been a lot worse than 9/11. It happened: the first 9/11, it happened on September 11, 1973, in Chile. We did it. Was that interfering or hacking a party? This record is all over the world, constantly overthrowing governments, invading, forcing people to follow what we call democracy, as in the cases I mentioned. As I say, if every charge is accurate, it’s a joke, and I’m sure half the world is collapsing in laughter about this, because people outside the United States know it. You don’t have to tell people in Chile about the first 9/11.

As for my problem, that would be you earlier jab about me supposedly lying.

Well, I do thank you for the compliment lurking somewhere in the first sentence, but I beg to differ. If the only thing going on was exposing ties between the Russian government and those in office, it would be one thing, because that would entail an investigation of everyone who holds office, but that's not what's happening. ONLY Trump's administration and campaign are being targeted. We are definitely feeling the treason innuendo swimming just beneath the surface. If we look hard enough, we will find ties between this Administration (or the last one), and Russia. Or, Syria. Or, Yemen. Or Saudi. Because, this is a small world, given our technology, and US citizens have ties virtually everywhere. That doesn't mean they're collaborating with a foreign government against their own. Is Dennis Rodman a traitor for befriending a North Korean dictator?

I thought we were past that as a nation.

That's why this is the new McCarthyism. Because the democrats have decided to scare the bejesus out of the American people, via accusations of collusion in the highest levels of government with the always-evil Reds. Granted, the democrats are not equating "dissent with treason," but that's the only difference, and it's a small, inconsequential difference. They are equating the letter "R" behind one's name with treason. It's an attempt to wield the same sword McCarthy once held. Noting that the trajectory of the swing is 15-degrees off is not a defense.

A young Mennonite woman who is currently teaching in the Ukraine writes me occasionally. That's close enough to Russia. Perhaps some of the new McCarthyists will see that as reason to bring me in for questioning.

Just kidding in that last statement, but this is getting out of hand, Wolf. I know you don't like the Cheeto Jesus, but witch hunts never bode well.

NOAM CHOMSKY: It’s a pretty remarkable fact that—first of all, it is a joke. Half the world is cracking up in laughter. The United States doesn’t just interfere in elections. It overthrows governments it doesn’t like, institutes military dictatorships. Simply in the case of Russia alone—it’s the least of it—the U.S. government, under Clinton, intervened quite blatantly and openly, then tried to conceal it, to get their man Yeltsin in, in all sorts of ways.
