A sad day in Mudville, the mighty Mark May has stuck out.

@Docthehun (http://thepoliticalforums.com/member.php?u=1986), @ripmeister (http://thepoliticalforums.com/member.php?u=2035), @DGUtley (http://thepoliticalforums.com/member.php?u=2019), @NapRover (http://thepoliticalforums.com/member.php?u=2018)

The heavy hand of forced layoffs culled ESPN on Wednesday. While big names like Ed Werder and Jay Crawford were axed, others were let go in less public fashion.

After suffering a demotion before the 2017 football season, ESPN fired college football analyst Mark May, according to Awful Announcing (http://awfulannouncing.com/espn/confirmed-espn-layoffs-constantly-updated.html).

May is a notorious troll of Ohio State (http://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio-state-football/2015/04/52445/bon-voyage-mark-may-bidding-adieu-to-ohio-states-most-notorious-troll), so don't expect many tears to come from Columbus over this.

What's happening at ESPN? Are people growing tired of watching more sports talk than actual sports?

I was so upset I overslept!
As a Buckeye/Notre Dame fan, I'm twice blessed to see him go!

Yes.

It's about time. Over the years I have become more than willing to miss the first few moments of a game just so I don't have to listen to the hype machine.

I don't watch it unless there's something specifically that I want to see. I don't like the politics. I don't like the SEC favoritism -- I call it SECSPN. I don't like the east coast favoritism -- they'll talk Boston and NY when the Tribe or someone else is in First Place. I don't like the left wing politics. I think they're anti-Ohio State. They went after the Big Ten b/c of The Big Ten Network but gave the SEC a pass on its scandals.

I like sports.

He is so bad that I actually reevaluated how I think about Notre Dame. Never a fan, I was not fair in my appraisals.

For that I think we should see if may can float.

Also, people are dropping cable in droves.

A little commentary and intelligent discussion is okay, but the sports media generally has just gone completely overboard with the incessant talk - much of it very negative and confrontational. I've even stopped reading the editorializing of the sports writers in my local newspaper; it adds nothing whatever to my enjoyment of The Game. I used to listen to Jim Rome on the radio and found him to be very entertaining, but he was like so many other "sports" folks, whether in the media or just the guy sitting next to you at the ballpark - it seems as though they don't believe you can be a knowledgeable fan unless you've got something bad to say about someone every few seconds. Don't we get enough cynicism and snark in all other realms of life these days? Rivalries and trash-talk have their place, but it shouldn't be three hours of game and twenty-one hours of angry commentary.

I am a writer, and as my friends can tell you I've written a lot of sports. I was one of the first to start using a voice recorder in press conferences in Ohio. Reporters either wrote quickly or used shorthand. So my quotes were perfect. Others? Less so. In truth, I forced everyone else to get voice recorders.

So, I guess my opinion of sports journalism has evolved over time.

People just want bandwidth, not 175 channels that they never watch. I will probably join that demographic soon.

Reporters interesting questions:
-what does this mean to you, to win the super bowl?
-how big is this for your program, to win the national championship?
-how does it feel to be named MVP of the World Series?
-what went through your mind when that ox gored you?

Some of my best interviews started with me saying, "your thoughts?" and then pointing the voice recorder at them.

They just did something cool. They know what to say. I learned to just get out of their way.

The ones who freak out bethere are the ones who shake their heads in affirmation throughout the answer as if they were saying, "yes, I agree!" or "I can't believe you are still here!"

I have a feeling that they're still starting from all the money they had to pay for the new NBA tv deal.

You know, I love the nba. On Saturdays at 8est they have a game of the week. It flips between providers, sometimes espn, sometimes tbs...

It usually involves playing Friday and Saturday nights back to back. In April, the reason the cavs record sucked was because the cavs said, screw those games.

The cavs flew 17000 miles in April. Think about that. I think they had 5 home games. So they were smart and rested players.

The warriors, who lost last year because they ran out of gas did the same thing.

Throughout April, the nba game of the week for the billion dollar tv package featured a series of 30 point losses by the nba's best teams.

And they bitched on the air about it. A lot. They had a point.

So, that money? We'll see.

I'm more of an NFL fan but I've had years where I out predicted the gurus so how much can I relly get from them?
Also the scripted talking points and buzz words like "quarterback driven leauge" or "let em play" drive me nuts. If I'm going to watch a show about sports I want some originality and someone who has the balls to admit the obvious fact that the NFL is NOT calling blantant penalties in the passing game more often than they are calling them. Or that the very inconsistency of when contact with the ball in the air is actually going to be called can and does decide games. Instead of that, when I turn on sports TV I get buzz words, cheerleaders for the leauge ( and usually not the pretty kind) and grade school mentalities. More like beer salesman than sports commentators.
They're a joke to any real sports fan.

They are kinda getting screwed when LeBron, Durant, half the spurs roster, etc, randomly sit out games on national tv, considering what they're paying.

They are, and yet baseball eliminated the double header a long time ago. They created the get away game to end series. And they rest their starters all of the time.

In football? Week 17 of the nfl season is a joke. No one that matters is playing. Nor do the announcers whine about it.

If LeBron and company had contested all of those games that simply didn't matter in April they'd be hurtin for certain in May and June.

What's happening at ESPN? Are people growing tired of watching more sports talk than actual sports?I think it's more an issue of people getting fed up with sports reporters opining on politics. If they tune in to watch a sporting event or listen to sports talk, they don't want to be bombarded with politics.

I know people and sometimes am one who is just as good as the "talking head experts " at predicting outcomes. So basically it's all talk.

Not for me, although I'm with you I don't like that either. The scipted unimaginitive over use of "buzz words" and phrases drives me nuts. Can't we have some originality?
