This is the story that just won't go away.

Did someone in the Obama Administration really use NSA intercepts to spy on politicians last year? There's an interesting short little video on this site. (http://circa.com/politics/rand-paul-obama-may-have-spied-on-me-other-lawmakers-using-nsa-intercepts)

Of course he spied on Rand. They spy on everyfuckingbody all the time. That's the people's beautiful Donephant for you. If it weren't for people like Bradley Manning and hero Ed Snowden we wouldn't know what we know. But you can best believe we still don't know all of it.

Phooey.

It reads like someone concerned about the Obama Administration overstepping its boundaries wrote it.

You must not know much about Rand Paul. There are some of us to whom the constitutional law is very important, almost sacrosanct. He is one.

Good for him, and you. However what I get out of that letter is "let me know when I need a lawyer".

I've read hundreds of 'let me know when I need a lawyer' letters and attended more of those types of meetings. I didn't get that out of that letter, but ok.

I don't think anyone can escape surveillance. If anything, politicians should probably be at the top of the list since they have security clearances and knowledge of classified information. If they are somehow communicating with someone inappropriately or having some other relationship that would put national security at risk, it makes sense to watch/listen for it. They probably are one of the most at-risk groups in terms of damage they could do if they inappropriately handle information, or pass it on to a third party.

Basically, I do not support the government or the NSA in their efforts, but if exceptions are going to be made it certainly should not be for politicians.

Politicians are citizens first, with all the same constitutional protections as every other legal citizen, imo.

They are put in a position of power and trust. They are not regular citizens - their jobs require that they have access to information that a regular citizen does not. They sit on committees where they are given information that regular citizens are not.

True, but they still have the same privacy protection under law as any other citizen, I believe.

I think that by virtue of assuming certain powers that they agree to certain waivers.

Perhaps, but I doubt those waivers extend to unmasking their identities when they are not the subject of the investigation. If it did, why would this even be a story?

Well unfortunately it appears they targeted people just like Rosen from FOX because they didn't like FOX. Typical Chicago behavior. Now you see even more popping up and unusual changes on information sharing on the way out the door.

They were doing something. You just rationalizing it or blowing it off isn't helpful. If you want to review Trump because you see smoke go ahead just be consistent.

Read Rand's letter in the OP. He suggests himself and "others in the legislative branch" might have been subject to the NSA surveillance.

The NSA collects ALL electronic communications, subjects them to computerized, algorithmic processing, and then stores the information indefinitely in a massive database. Naturally, that would include any electronic communications made by Trump and Paul. There is simply no debate among informed people that this is happening.

Is there work afforded that privacy? If some of these politicians were unmasked, it would have been their work that was the focus, not their regular lives.

Yup, he believes in the Constitution. Not like most people who view the BOR's as a pick and choose menu. He actually believes in and supports the whole thing , unlike almost anyone else in Washington.
