FBI Details 61% Rise in Number of Law Officers ‘Feloniously Killed in Line of Duty’
Preliminary statistics released (https://www.fbi.gov/news/pressrel/press-releases/fbi-releases-2016-preliminary-statistics-for-law-enforcement-officers-killed-in-the-line-of-duty) Monday by the FBI show that 66 law enforcement officers were feloniously killed in the line of duty in 2016 - an increase of 61% from the 41 officers killed in 2015.
“This must end,” President Donald Trump declared at a memorial service (http://www.cnsnews.com/blog/craig-bannister/trump-end-reckless-words-incitement-against-police-officers) for the nation’s fallen officers on Monday:
“This must end. That is why one of my first actions was to direct the Department of Justice to develop a strategy to better prevent and prosecute crimes of violence against our Federal, State, tribal, and local law enforcement officers.”
Offenders used firearms in 93.9% (62 of the 66) felonious deaths. These included:
37 incidents with handguns,
24 incidents with rifles,
4 victim officers were killed with vehicles used as weapons, and
1 incident with a shotgun.
By region, nearly half of the officers killed as a result of criminal acts occurred in the South:
South: 30 officers killed,
West: 17 officers killed,
Midwest: 13 officers killed,
Northeast: 4 officers killed,
Puerto Rico: 2 officers killed
At the time the 66 law enforcement officers were fatally wounded:
17 were ambushed (entrapment/premeditation);
13 were answering disturbance calls (seven were domestic disturbance calls);
9 were investigating suspicious persons/circumstances;
6 were engaged in tactical situations;
5 were performing investigative activities;
4 were conducting traffic pursuits/stops;
3 were investigating drug-related matters;
3 were victims of unprovoked attacks;
1 was answering a robbery in progress call or pursuing a robbery suspect(s);
1 was answering a burglary in progress call or pursuing a burglary suspect(s);
4 were attempting other arrests.
Of the 66 officers killed, 50 (76%) were confirmed to be wearing body armor at the times of the incidents. Fourteen of the 66 slain officers fired their service weapons, and 10 officers attempted to fire their weapons. Three victim officers had their weapons stolen; one officer was killed with his own weapon.
The 66 victim officers died from injuries sustained in 56 separate incidents. Fifty-four of those incidents have been cleared by arrest or exceptional means.
Another 52 officers were killed in line-of-duty accidents in 2016, which are officer deaths that were found not to be willful and intentional. This is an increase of 16% from the 45 officers who were accidentally killed in 2015.
The South again led all regions, doubling the second highest death toll:
South: 24 officers died from accidents,
Midwest: 12 officers died from accidents,
West: 9 officers died from accidents,
Northeast: 5 officers died from accidents, and
Puerto Rico: 2 officers died from accidents.
Final statistics and complete details will be available in the Uniform Crime Reporting Program’s publication, Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted, 2016, which will be published on the FBI website in the fall.

The biggest increase appears to be in the "ambushed" category, and that's troublesome.
I think we've always known there was a deadly element present when an officer tried to arrest someone who had nothing to lose and so, threatened the officer's life.
Training might be able to help in the latter case, but the ambush problem, I fear, will only result in increased depolicing, which will then trigger a rise in other crimes.

61%? Don't you mean an increase of just 25 incidents from 2015?
Aren't you exaggerating just to get a rise out of your opponents? Consider the trend line on this graph:

66 tragic events. However if 66 is a huge increase it underscores that police work is not as dangerous as TV would lead you to believe , even when you add in the other 52. I still think sanitation workers run a greater risk of dying on the job, for example. Should we try to make police work safer? Absolutely. But as a society lets not hype and inflate the danger to every townie on patrol and make them trigger happier. Also note only "3 were investigating drug related matters" . Another anti-drug message severly over blown in the press and society at large.
Hopefully procedures can help bring down the ambush deaths

Going from 41 to 66 IS a 61% increase. FYI. However the fact that 25 additional deaths can increase the number by 61% means that the number was , thankfully, fairly low to begin with

Of course it is, but without noting that we are experiencing historic lows it is seriously misleading.

In that case killing 61% more liberals isnt a big deal because the number was low to begin with.
Democrats have lost Law enforcement and their immediate families and a portion of their extended families and friends, that number is in the millions. You can thank obama lynch and holder for that

The whole danger factor for cops, while real, is misleading. As I said santiation workers have a more dangerous job.

I can't wait for the full study to be released, then we can see how much BLM played a part in this "increase" and how much Sovereign Citizens played a part.

As I pointed out -- the biggest increase is in "ambush" killings of officers.
That's significant because it signals a potential trend that needs to be analyzed and reversed.

You are sorry, I dont get infracted because I have self discipline and restraint. I got infracted many times in cigars and your incessant troll threads. Then it was YOU and Cigar and a couple of other trolls that never got infracted, you were a protected species. Now when its discipline for all, you either make the grade or go down the toilet.
As far as your insinuation of bias here and your little bias rant in the hole when you got a 3 day infraction. I demonstrated that the right gets more infractions then the left. Now I have a gift for you
I have some cheese for your whine

Try to stay on topic. This thread is about, while at near record lows already, how only 25 more cops were killed in 2016 than in 2015 out of a population of 350,000,000 Americans.
