Hemmings was not a slave inasmuch as Jefferson never kept her as a slave. She was free to go whenever she wanted. One must consider the society of the times. Black women were subject to slavery by many early Americans. If she had left, she probably would have ended up being a real slave........

She was free togo. Period. Unless you can back up your claim, my statement stands. Jefferson didn't believe that people should be "owned" however, he was one against many. Hemmings was given all the things white women had. Her own home, for example. Justbecause she stayed with him does not indicate ownership. Jeffereson had to deal with the mode of society of the times.
Please try to do some in-depth study into this.............None of their offspring will declare what you just claimed

Sally Hemings was Jefferson's wife's half-sister. Jefferson's wife was reputed to be a beautiful woman. As she died she made Jefferson promise to never remarry. Jefferson lived with Sally Hemings for 40 years and had six children together.

Actually, it did not prove it. Nobody really knows if Thomas Jefferson or one of his male relatives fathered the children. All we can do is assign a probability. But given the totality of the evidence, I believe the probability strongly favors Thomas Jefferson.

She was technically his slave. But you're right to characterize their relationship as a mutual one. Sally Hemmings could have left Jefferson while they were in France but she returned to America with him willingly on condition that any children they had would be emancipated.

It comes as close as it can get actually. If you know some stuff about DNA, and in the genealogical sense, which is what the Jefferson story is, the match (genealogical distance) can be from say 7, which is not very close, down to 0. The more markers that are tested the closer the match can get and I'll bet that the modern back relatives drew something like a 3 or better that there is 99.99 % chance that the testees (one or more) have a common ancestor with a direct descendant of Jefferson's father...

Anyway, it went something like that, and Jefferson does have modern black relatives, so.

Right; she was a slave, so stjames1_53 is quite wrong

The c that Thomas Jefferson fathered children with Sally Hemings, a slave at Monticello, entered the public arena during Jefferson's first term as president, and it has remained a subject of discussion and disagreement for two centuries. Based on documentary, scientific, statistical, and oral history evidence, the Thomas Jefferson Foundation (TJF) Research Committee Report on Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings (https://www.monticello.org/site/plantation-and-slavery/report-research-committee-thomas-jefferson-and-sally-hemings) (January 2000) remains the most comprehensive analysis of this historical topic. TJF and most historians believe that, years after his wife’s death, Thomas Jefferson was the father of the six children of Sally Hemings mentioned in Jefferson's records, including Beverly, Harriet, Madison, and Eston Hemings.

Like I said, I strongly believe Jefferson and Hemmings did have children together. But there is SOME uncertainty.
